Organising Committee for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007
By Jack A. Warner
Chairman of the Organising Committee for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Korea 2007
FIFA has every reason to look back with pride on its decision, almost 20 years ago, to give a huge boost to youth football worldwide by introducing this tournament, initially an event for the Under 16s and changed in 1991 to Under 17s.
The championship thus provides a world stage for everyone from fledgling professionals signed to top clubs to teenagers, enjoying their football and looking ahead to see what the game holds for them in the future
Such is the importance of football to the world's youth and such is the nature of the game, that some young men at this age have already made their mark in their own lands. All of them will have completed a significant part of their football education by now, with maturity and experience to come to complete their path.
Certainly, they know how to play good football. The crowds, many of them far exceeding expectations, have now come to expect skill and passion and flowing football and such is the ebullience of youth that this will not change. Television audiences around the world, too, have warmly welcomed the opportunity to watch the youth of today who may become the stars of tomorrow, such as the young boys who grew into the men we know today named Veron and Kanu, Del Piero and Nakata, Ronaldinho, Kewell, Petit and Reyna.
