Gabriel Heinze opened the scoring after two minutes when his 25-yard shot squirmed under Adam Federici's body.

Louis Saha rifled in an angled volley for 2-0, before Ole Gunnar Solksjaer slotted in the third.

Reading pulled one back through Dave Kitson's header before Leroy Lita's late strike ensured a thrilling finish.

As well as the visitors did with the chances that came their way, each goal was a gift courtesy of the generous and, frankly, awful Reading defence.



The calamity began with just two minutes of the match played. A break on the right saw O'Shea's pull-back arrive at the feet of full-back Heinze.

The Argentine steadied himself and fired in a low shot that squeezed under the body of the flapping Federici - who, ironically, was handed the Man of the Round award after his sterling efforts at Old Trafford.

Almost straight after the restart United were 2-0 up when the lively Saha chested down Ferdinand's raking pass and struck his angled volley past the Australian keeper.

And the nightmare start to end all nightmare starts was given a gloss finish by Solskjaer who collected Kieron Richardson's pass, sprung the offside trap, and planted an eight-yard shot with the outside of his boot past the demoralised Federici.

Royals boss Steve Coppell did eventually realise things were not going right for his team after 15 minutes, changing from having three at the back to a 4-4-2 formation. It steadied the rocky ship and stemmed the United tide.

Reading reduced the deficit midway through the half when Ivar Ingimarsson flicked on John Oster's corner to Kitson, who nodded in from two yards.

Game on? Not at that point. Oster, who was very lively down the right, was giving the United defence a tough time and keeper Van der Sar had to be alert to a handful of teasing crosses - but the Manchester side were coping well.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson's midfield became increasingly sloppy in the second half and Reading took advantage.

They gave their supporters some hope six minutes from time when Lita converted Ulises de la Cruz's cross from 12 yards.

And with just a few seconds remaining of the match, Brynjar Gunnarsson almost took the tie into extra time when his 20-yarder beat Van der Sar, but rattled off the crossbar. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Gabriel Heinze, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaergave United a stunning lead but Dave Kitson and Leroy Lita made a game of it for The Royals.

Both sides fielded a number of their fringe players, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes on the bench for United.

Had Reading not gotten off to such a nightmarish start, it may just be them taking their place in the FA Cup quarterfinals instead of the current Premiership leaders.

After just two minutes, Adam Federici, so outstanding when the teams met at Old Trafford, allowed a Heinze shot to roll underneath his body and over the line: a howler from the Australian.

Barely two minutes later it was 2-0 as Saha buried a stunning low shot past Federici from the left side of the penalty area.

More slack defending from the hosts saw them fall 3-0 behind after six minutes. This time Solskjaer found himself all alone, closed on Federici, and drove a cultured shot with the outside of his right foot into the far corner of the net.

Rarely had the FA Cup, or any competition, seen a start like this.

It could have been worse on 11 minutes when the lively Saha escaped his marker and shot inches wide after a slight deflection which should have earned his team a corner.

Instead, Kitson reduced the arrears on 23 minutes when he headed in unmarked at the far post after Ivar Ingimarsson had flicked on John Oster's corner.

The final action of the half saw Edwin van der Sar push away a long-range effort from Seol Ki-Hyeon, before Andre Bikey headed the resulting corner just wide.

Federici saved a low effort from Kieran Richardson to keep his side in the game, while some clumsy control from Ji-Sung Park prevented Solskjaer from going through one-on-one.

Some sharp goalkeeping from van der Sar kept out a goal-bound effort from Kitson after a smart turn as United handed the initiative to Reading.

Substitute Leroy Lita set up a grandstand finish as he expertly headed a Ulises de la Cruz cross low past van der Sar.

Brynjar Gunnarsson came so close to taking the match into extra-time as he slammed a ferocious shot against the bar, but United held on to set up a quarterfinal clash against Middlesbrough, which beat West Bromwich Albion on penalties Tuesday night.


Sir Alex Ferguson would surely have been furious at the manner in which his team appeared to invite the hosts on, but ultimately the Scot will be relieved that an under-strength side has qualified for the next round.
