If the name was given under the similar circumstances as say "the black stars", i doubt people would have a problem.

Well, this article says they are called "The Black Stars" to "specifically to reflect the aspirations of the black race". Would that be okay then, for the Polish team to be named "The White Stars" to "specifically to reflect the aspirations of the white race"?

actually that was not my point...LOL!! but yeah ALL THAT TUH!!! my point was that there is a team with a nickname to reflect their race and it has caused no controversy.

how could one argue against it? in fact there might be internal squabblings as i am not sure the germans would be happy with the poles carrying and representing the aspirations of the white race.

Right, but would there be controversy if that team was a bunch of white players with a nickname to reflect their race?

Do you think that the Zulus of South Africa want the Dagomba tribe of Ghana carrying and representing their aspirations? I speculate that the reason there has been no controversy is because Ghana had to figure out a way to unite their own warring tribes and the only (wholly uncreative) unifying thing was their race, certainly not their respective ethnic heritages.

That is wrong. Ghana less than other African country had very little warring amongst their 'tribes'. Kwame Nkrumah their leader at independence was a Pan Africanist and a supporter of Marcus Garvey's philosophy. The 'Black Star' for Ghana was a homage to the Black Star Liner shipping fleet started by Marcus Garvey.

Regarding the name "Black Stars" you may be right, but the article says different. I don't know about the reason behind the name so maybe you can give me some source to back up your position.

That said, I don't know what constitutes "very little warring" for you as in the mid nineties, several thousand people died in ethnic conflict in northern Ghana before a peace treaty was reached.

there shouldn't be....especially because there is a team called the black stars which has not caused any controversy.

maybe if under apartheid SA had done so .....

I don't think so...the real question is, would the name "White Stars" be controversial?
