First of all, Suarez denied making any racial insults. The case came down to the meaning of “negro” in Spanish (the nearest translation to English is “black”). He did state that he said “negro” ONCE, inoffensively. The FA's own linguistic experts agreed that: “the use of ‘negro’ as described here by Mr Suarez would not be offensive."(Section 190 of the FA's report)

To put an even finer point on the fiasco, Evra said Suarez said: “Porque tu eres negro” (“Because you are black” – Section 205).

According to the experts, Evra's version could be taken as offensive BUT the phrase struck them as “slightly unusual” (Section 182) whereas the phrase claimed by Suarez “sounded right linguistically and culturally”. (Section 191)
