  • How Sir Alex Ferguson’s fighters beat their injury crisis

Tom Cleverley is set to be the latest wounded hero to bolster United’s title push as the Reds horrendous injury pile-up begins to ease.

It is hard to recall a more debilitating medical meltdown than the one that has beset Old Trafford this season.

You would be hard pushed to dig deep into the history books and uncover a more wretched catalogue of injuries and illness that has infiltrated the Reds ranks.

Few players have remained unscathed as the plague bit into Sir Alex Ferguson’s senior resources.

When he brought Paul Scholes on against City in the FA Cup the returning retired midfielder was the 35th player Fergie had used to patch up his team this season - and it was only January 8 at the time.

At one point there were up to 11 of United’s established first-team squad who were unavailable to the Reds boss.

City have had a whinge this winter about the damaging loss of Yaya and Kolo Toure to the African Nations Cup and Vincent Kompany’s four-match ban.

Liverpool have bellyached about the influential Steve Gerrard’s injuries this term and the eight-match suspension for their key striker Luis Suarez.

    Bleats

And Arsenal have moaned about the season-long loss of critical midfield inspiration Jack Wilshere and the debilitating affect on the defence that losing full-backs Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs has had.

All have proffered bleats about absent key figures as reasons for blips or defective title challenges.

Could any other side have coped with the kind of pile-up the champions’ Carrington treatment rooms have witnessed?

Defensive rock and skipper Nemanja Vidic’s cruciate knee ligament injury in Basel and Darren Fletcher’s cruel illness-enforced break would sap most squads alone.

But add other disruption and it is amazing that the champions are still in a two-horse race for the crown.

Most other teams would have given up the ghost under such a devastating disadvantage and gone away to lick their wounds.

Presented with a brutal sick list of that magnitude other club’s would have complained about Lady Luck deserting them and used it as an excuse for faltering ambitions.

But United’s survivors have rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into a task heavily weighted against them.

True it has seen them come up short spectacularly in the Champions League but even that body blow, added to the loss of numbers, hasn’t ruined the bid for the title.

Now with the cavalry arriving before the spring push the Blues, in particular, are looking tentatively over their shoulders as the United squad grows.

    United’s army of crock stars

    Chris Smalling

Fergie’s versatile defender has operated at right-back and centre of defence this season but has picked up a groin injury in September, a broken foot in October and suffered a bout of tonsillitis over Christmas and New Year. A knock in training last week cost him game at Chelsea.

    Games missed: 14

    Rio Ferdinand

The 33-year-old was injured on day one at West Brom with a hamstring problem and suffered a knock at QPR before Christmas.

    Games missed: 8

    Nemanja Vidic

The title-winning captain has endured a nightmare season. Kicking off with a calf injury at the Hawthorns on the opening day, he then ruptured his ankle ligaments against Basel in the Champions League ruling him out for the season.

    Games missed: 23

    Phil Jones

Has had a fantastic debut season but the £16m player suffered a minor setback at Fulham when he escaped an initially suspected broken cheekbone but was KO’d at Arsenal with ankle damage.

    Games missed: 4

    Rafael

The Brazilian full-back dislocated his shoulder on the eve of the league campaign then suffered another injury against Crystal Palace in the Carling Cup before returning on New Years’ Eve.

    Games missed: 26

    Fabio

Like his brother he has been dogged by injury concerns his season and has been absent since a hamstring complaint forced him off against Crystal Palace in November.

    Games missed: 14

    Jonny Evans

Nothing major suffered by the Northern Ireland international defender but has been on the sidelines on a few occasions with niggling knocks.

    Games missed: 10

    Patrice Evra

Missed the first day of the season at West Brom after a knee injury sustained in the Community Shield but it has been the only Premier League match Vidic’s replacement as skipper has missed all term.

    Games missed: 1

    Anders Lindegaard

Has been trouble-free as he’s battled David de Gea for the keeper’s spot but just at the time the fight was becoming critical he suffered ankle ligament damage in training last week and faces up to six weeks out.

    Games missed: 2

    Antonio Valencia

Ruled out of United’s pre-season tour of the USA after ankle injury playing for Ecuador in the summer. Came back in mid-September and has been injury free since.

    Games missed: 5

    Anderson

The Brazilian midfielder has had torrid time with problems. Had knee surgery in November and did return earlier than projected, but has recently picked up a knock that is still keeping him out.

    Games missed: 16

    Michael Carrick

Had a couple of slight early-season niggles but has been consistently available since November.

    Games missed: 10

    Tom Cleverley

One of the reasons for United’s blistering early-season form but ankle ligaments sustained after challenge by Kevin Davies at Bolton wrecked his season. Returned briefly in October but the problem resurfaced and has been out since.

    Games missed: 29

    Ryan Giggs

A month out with a hamstring problem has been the veteran 38-year-old’s only concern this season.

    Games missed: 6

    Ji-Sung Park

A few niggles but nothing serious on the Korean’s medical record.

    Games missed: 6

    Darren Fletcher

The Scottish dynamo was forced to take an extended break from football duties in December by his bowel illness.

    Games missed: 22

    Ashley Young

Was one of the bright sparks behind the Reds’ sensational opening to term but picked up a toe injury in late October and then damaged his knee at Fulham in December. Comeback at Chelsea last Sunday.

    Games missed: 14

    Nani

Had largely avoided long-term injury, but the winger limped away from Arsenal with a protective boot on his foot and has been out since.

    Games missed: 3

    Danny Welbeck

A hamstring injury curtailed a dynamic start to his return to United after loan spell last season at Sunderland. Then he suffered a muscle injury on England duty in November.

    Games missed: 8

    Dimitar Berbatov

One or two minor problems but has largely been kept in cold storage rather than being KO’d by injury.

    Games missed: 4

    Wayne Rooney

Just a handful of matches in September due to a hamstring injury robbed United of the services of their top striker.

    Games missed: 3

    Javier Hernandez

The Mexican’s second season has been fragmented by problems. Concussion on the tour of America cost him the opening weeks of the season and he suffered ankle damage at Aston Villa in December.

    Games missed: 6

    Michael Owen

Badly damaged his hamstring in a rare outing against Otelul Galati in Champions League at Old Trafford in November and has been sidelined since.

    Games missed: 19

... people can hate all dem want. This organization is simply extraordinary. I recall a few seasons back .... we had a back 4 Evra, Carrick, Fletcher and Park playing defense. They won a home game then got trounced 0-3 by Fulham ... yet went on to win the league.

Against Stoke Lindegaard and Degea both injuried ... Amos had to step in.

Yet .... with all a this ... still 2 points behind City .... and Bricktop a talk bout pressure? LOL .... (in Roundhead voice) "Probably they never hearddd a we!"

For Owen it should be "games played" and something like 0. LOL
      • Don't let negative things break you, instead let it be your strength, your reason for growth. Life is for living and I won't spend my life feeling cheated and downtrodden.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...all minor matters. The fact is that the one injury y'all can't afford is injury to Howard Webb. See where you would be with that one!!

Are these games missed due to injury ONLY, or simply the number of games they didn't play in for whatever reason?

Fight? I was just appalled when I first saw the highlight. I had to rewind several times to make sure. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was not in the position to swing through as he did and if you watch the video carefully, you'll see where his eyes dropped to Parker just before impact. At full speed, it could pass as an accident but he knew exactly what he was doing.
