Tom Cleverley is set to be the latest wounded hero to bolster United’s title push as the Reds horrendous injury pile-up begins to ease.
It is hard to recall a more debilitating medical meltdown than the one that has beset Old Trafford this season.
You would be hard pushed to dig deep into the history books and uncover a more wretched catalogue of injuries and illness that has infiltrated the Reds ranks.
Few players have remained unscathed as the plague bit into Sir Alex Ferguson’s senior resources.
When he brought Paul Scholes on against City in the FA Cup the returning retired midfielder was the 35th player Fergie had used to patch up his team this season - and it was only January 8 at the time.
At one point there were up to 11 of United’s established first-team squad who were unavailable to the Reds boss.
City have had a whinge this winter about the damaging loss of Yaya and Kolo Toure to the African Nations Cup and Vincent Kompany’s four-match ban.
Liverpool have bellyached about the influential Steve Gerrard’s injuries this term and the eight-match suspension for their key striker Luis Suarez.
Bleats
And Arsenal have moaned about the season-long loss of critical midfield inspiration Jack Wilshere and the debilitating affect on the defence that losing full-backs Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs has had.
All have proffered bleats about absent key figures as reasons for blips or defective title challenges.
Could any other side have coped with the kind of pile-up the champions’ Carrington treatment rooms have witnessed?
Defensive rock and skipper Nemanja Vidic’s cruciate knee ligament injury in Basel and Darren Fletcher’s cruel illness-enforced break would sap most squads alone.
But add other disruption and it is amazing that the champions are still in a two-horse race for the crown.
Most other teams would have given up the ghost under such a devastating disadvantage and gone away to lick their wounds.
Presented with a brutal sick list of that magnitude other club’s would have complained about Lady Luck deserting them and used it as an excuse for faltering ambitions.
But United’s survivors have rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into a task heavily weighted against them.
True it has seen them come up short spectacularly in the Champions League but even that body blow, added to the loss of numbers, hasn’t ruined the bid for the title.
Now with the cavalry arriving before the spring push the Blues, in particular, are looking tentatively over their shoulders as the United squad grows.
