SportsMax scores big with 'Cine Zone'

    Published: Monday | February 6, 2012

The usual hush expected to loom over the Carib Cinema in Cross Roads, as patrons fix their eyes on the 36x17 ft screens to watch the latest movies, the silence broken only by gasps, occasional cheers, or jeers, was yesterday replaced by boisterous fans of the English Premier League (EPL) and in particular Manchester United and Chelsea.

SportsMax, in collaboration with Carib, LIME, Guinness, The Gleaner and The Star, hosted the first in a series of live matches from the EPL, dubbed the 'SportsMax Cine Zone'.

The scores of fans clad in replicas of their teams' jerseys, who descended on the venue from 10 a.m. for the 11 a.m. kick-off, engaged in friendly banter as they feasted on the breakfast offerings and Guinness prior to game time.

The game's opening goal in the 36th minute, which was an own goal by Manchester United's Jonny Evans sent Chelsea supporters and Manchester United detractors alike into a frenzy. These scenes were replicated in the 46th and 50th minutes, as Juan Mata and David Luiz respectively gave Chelsea a 3-0 lead. Most of the Manchester United fans lost their voice, with only a few die-hard ones putting up a brave front, as the defending champions looked poised for another defeat at The Bridge and to lose significant ground on noisy neighbours Manchester City in a tight title race.

    Timely comeback
However, as has been the case on several occasions in the past, the 'Red Devils' clawed their way back courtesy of two well-taken penalties by Wayne Rooney in the 58th and 69th minutes, before Javier Hernandez headed home an improbable equaliser in the 84th minute.

Manchester United fans departed Carib feeling like winners, but the real winner was football and the organising team lead by SportsMax Regional Marketing Manager, Tanya Lee.

SportsMax has intentions of hosting other events at Carib, outside of the EPL, such as the UEFA Champions League final and the Indian Premier League (T20 cricket). The next match being considered, however, is the March 4th meeting between Tottenham and Manchester United.

Persons were admitted to the venue by invitation only and that is set to hold for the future, but there is something special in store for SportsMax subscribers.

"We are going to have different modes of entry, depending on the type of the promotion we are doing, but we are keen on doing one that is specifically geared towards our subscribers," Lee said.

"We are actually celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and as a part of that diamond celebration we want to have a special event, which only our subscribers are allowed to enter. It will be our way of saying thanks to persons who have been loyal to SportsMax throughout the years," she added.
