Sterling has shown glimpses of his senior ability on pre-season tours

If you didn’t know it already, Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is a player to watch.
The 17-year-old arrived at Anfield with a massive reputation, moving to Merseyside from QPR for a reported £600,000 in February 2010. That figure could rise to £5 million depending on appearances for club and country.
Since the move, Sterling has shown glimpses of his senior ability on pre-season tours, featuring under Roy Hodgson in August 2010 and again the following year under Kenny Dalglish.

Despite impressing against Borussia Monchengladback and Valerenga respectively, a competitive call to action is yet to come the teenager’s way.
That shouldn’t be the case for much longer though, if last night’s performance in the 1-0 NextGen Series quarter-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur is anything to go by.
The England youth international was the stand-out performer at White Hart Lane, outshining highly-rated Spurs striker Souleymane Coulibaly on a night when little went the way of the Ivorian forward on home turf.
Whilst the result was a negative for the Reds, the performance of note came from either side came via Sterling, who showed raw speed, quick feet, close control and, most importantly, an end product. He was unfortunate to see his forward colleagues unable to take advantage, whilst a super second-half save from Jonathan Miles denied Sterling his own equaliser in the contest.
In its inaugural year, the NextGen was set up to help players showcase their ability against other top youth sides across Europe. The U19 tournament is billed as a stepping-stone for juniors to show their ready to make the move up in class to professional football.
And, if the competition is true to its word, then Sterling will be the man to watch in coming years. But, on yesterday’s performance in north London, it should be sooner.
In a 4-3-3 formation, which is currently employed by ‘King Kenny’ at Anfield in particular, Sterling has the ability to play on either flank, although appears more natural on the left. As is the modern trend, he threatens to cut-inside and shoot as much as heading for the by-line.
Of the attackers at the Scottish manager’s disposal, Luis Suarez, Maxi Rodriguez, Dirk Kuyt, Stewart Downing and Craig Bellamy have the ability to play in the wide areas.
Playing Sterling ahead of any of these players would be classed as a gamble, but Dalglish’s policy of playing senior first team members in the League Cup has limited the opportunities for young players. If they are to get their chance, then the league seems to be just as realistic an option.
Productivity has been Downing’s biggest problem this season, whilst Maxi has been used in more of a central role thus far. Suarez is currently suspended, whilst Bellamy and Kuyt have hit fine form for the Reds.
Whilst Jordan Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey have been given opportunities to shine, it appears that only an injury crisis would lead to Sterling getting a chance – as was the case for Jack Robinson and John Flanagan last season.
Both impressed in the sink-or-swim environment of top-flight domestic football, but have since fallen down the pecking order. Indeed, Flanagan played in the left back position for the U19s last night.
A pessimist would argue that, at 17, Sterling simply isn’t ready.
I would strongly disagree with this, highlighting his form for both the youth and reserve teams in that argument. The fact that West Ham, Bolton and Swansea were all keen in loan moves last month suggests that they also think the step-up won’t be a problem.
Dalglish doesn’t need people telling him what to do, and his work at Liverpool since replacing Hodgson has been nothing short of miraculous.
But, with Liverpool’s tradition of bringing players through one of the best academies in the world, this could be another potential coup for both club and country.
Using Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as an example, the teenager got his senior chance in the Championship, impressed at Southampton and was sold to Arsenal. Arsene Wenger has, in-turn, given the England youth international a chance to shine at the Emirates. Had he already been with the Gunners, he may not have got his chance.
That’s a concern over Sterling’s progress, and if Dalglish doesn’t think a first XI appearance is a risk worth taking, then surely a loan move away from Anfield would better serve the teenager’s development.
Does that mean Sterling is in the club’s first team plans? One can only hope that reserve team boss Rodolfo Borrell, who oversaw the rise of several star players at Barcelona, has issued a glowing reference back to his superior.
After yesterday’s performance, he could do little else.
Either way, Sterling's future is very bright, providing huge optimism for both club and country. Should his great form continue, Dalglish will only be able to resist the call for so long.
THERE IS ONLY ONE ONANDI LOWE!

"Good things come out of the garrisons" after his daughter won the 100m Gold For Jamaica.

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.

I saw him play recently in the nexgen series, he reminds me of patcova ,ronaldo, john barnes and saurez, more patcova/barnes....im terrible and will get better.Definetly a winger but that pace would make him an ideal upfront striker.

    Jamaica better cap him.

This youth is gonna take the Premiership by storm next season and should be a key man in Jamaica's qualifying campaign, even at 17 he is already good enough
to play for Jamaica. Cap him now

Very versatile , could be a romario type striker.KK should have loaned him out to Bolton. But the english are claiming him as there own, thats how good he is no question about it.

When im buss thats it.He is a fighter , doesnt stop running, really reminds me of coava with that diminutive frame and tenacity.

Sterling's future is very bright, providing huge optimism for both club and country.

Rafa biggest legacy is his youth system :Our defensive backline is all Rafa except Coates & enrique, Spearing another Rafa academy is getting better and better.

Flanagan & Kelly are pushing for roles in the starting 11.Rafa bought and kept, Carra,Johnson, Skertel,Agger, with the exception of Coates and Enrique ,its all Rafa.

In the summer of 2009 we saw an end to Rafa’s struggle to gain control of the academy when he penned a new contract at LFC which gave him full control. This saw a major overhaul at the academy and the appointment of the 3 men already mentioned and the return of Kenny Dalglish.

Frank McParland returned to the club as Director of LFC’s Academy after a spell at Bolton as general manager and would oversee the revolution. Pep Segura became Academy Technical Manager and Rodolfo Borrell was put in charge of coaching the U18’s. Both Segura and Borrell arrived at LFC with impressive CV’s which saw them both oversee Barcelona’s golden generation with players such as Pique, Iniesta, Fabregas & Messi coming through their world famous La Masia institution.
By putting all these pieces into place, Rafa Benitez layed the foundation for building a successful academy which in-turn will return players graduating all the way to the first team. We now have a coherent process for exciting young players to develop and have the best opportunity to make it to the first team. Training has now become more dynamic, skill based and concentrating on technique and personal development instead of building teams to win youth trophies. Although results on the pitch have been just as impressive recently with the U18’s currently on a 9 game winning streak and scoring 36 goals in the process. Rodolfo Borrell believes in the pass and move philosophy which has always been the moto at this football club so by our youngsters being taught this at an early age this can only benefit the club in the long run.
The academy is currently filled with talented player with over 20 individuals all receiving international call ups at youth level. A few years ago there was as little as 3 players in our youth set up receiving international recognition.
Players such as Conor Coady, Jack Robinson, Suso and Raheem Sterling have been grabbing all the headlines with their individual displays but you can add the likes of Andre Wisdom, John Flanagan, Toni Silva and Michael Ngoo to the list of potential future LFC stars. It is important that we don’t over hype these players and label them the next ‘Steven Gerrard’ and put unnecessary pressure on them. Credit must be give to Frank McParland & Rodolfo Borell who have moderated the hype around the current squad but when players are scoring 5 goals in a game and travelling with the first team squad it could be an impossible task of curbing the fans enthusiasm about having our very own golden generation.

It is easy to get carried away with all the current hype surrounding our youth team who recently demolished Southend 9-0 in the youth cup. Yet it is vital that we keep our expectations in check as we have had many false dawns before with players such as Marvin Pourie, Christopher Buchtmann, Lauri Dalla Valle who have all now left the club having failed to live up their hype.
One other exciting point i would like to make is that the current U16’s squad is thought to be just as talented if not better than their U18 colleagues. Obviously i don’t want go over the top but if we can get 3 or 4 quality players out of our current crop of youngsters which i believe there is a genuine chance of happening then in a few years we could witness something very special at the club.
Rafa also took a hands on role in youth recruitment, it is well known that Suso was due to sign for Real Madrid before Rafa made a personal phone call to him to persuade him otherwise. Toni Silva was all set to sign for Chelsea before again Rafa stepped in. Raheem Sterling was wanted by every major club around the world yet we managed to sign him from under the noses of those teams.
A lot of credit has to go to McParland, Segura, Borrell and Dalglish for being key figures in this revolution and carrying out the actions but we mustn’t forget the man who fought to bring them to the club and instigated the new philosophy & revolution at the academy. So if in the future one or more of these exciting prospects goes on to become a leading star at the club let’s not forget who put the foundations in place.
          Thank you Rafa.

I hope we will all remember the good that Rafa did , because there is a lot . Some wanted him gone others wanted him to stay .. well he has gone but his legacy is the young talent that he was instrumental in bringing to the club .
We should all salute what Rafa did (and he did bring the king back )..

Jamaica will never take him , they will say he is too young, Irony when Simoes buss Bibi that wasnt an issue, Jamaica doesnt know how to spot and develop sterlings.

They are all over the place, I had an ex with a kid like sterling, 5 years old and running around 8 and 9 yer olds, pure speed , mom pulled him from football and stuck him in extra classes for advanced students.

Speed is our forte , using it to our advantage is our down fall we havent a clue.

I am resigned to see him in a pool shirt as my consolidation.

Talent abounds so too dunces in the teaching department , from the top (JFF) to the bottom (clubs).

                COVA REBORN........FIGHTER WITH SPEED.

If we don't make it to Brasil, every member of this admin. needs to go away and never show them face on the national setup ever again. With the potential players we have at our disposal the JFF has no excuse not to make it to the cup in 2014.
