THE MARVIN LEE

HIGH DEFINITION FOOTBALL PITCH ALMOST READY AT THE MARVIN LEE

Within two weeks, the new artificial playing surface at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Centre of Excellence is expected to be ready for its first bit of action.

This was the word coming from project manager Gerard “Tex” Teixeira on the weekend as he and other workmen on site continued their duties while also admiring the look of the FIFA two-star artificial football pitch which can be described as high definition.

Teixeira explained that only the laying of the artificial grass on the ends of the field and the installation of the goalposts are needed for the completion.

“We have been having delays with getting in final set of material. The goal posts are still to be installed and of course we also started laying down the artificial grass from the centre so that we can leave room for the goal posts, most of the field is completed and we are hoping to have everything completed within the next couple of weeks,” Teixeira told TTFF Media.

“The weather conditions have been favourable to us because the sand cannot be applied when it’s wet and we hope we get more good weather over the next few days.

“What has happened over the past couple weeks is the grass has been put on, the surface has been sanded and rubberized. The lining of the field has been done and what we have to do now is complete the ends and put up the goals and then you can play all the football you want,” he added.

Teixeira accompanied a work staff comprising of workers from Domo, a European-based sports and leisure grass company as well as Terra Forma, the locally-based contracting company involved in the project which is an idea put forward by CONCACAF and CFU President Jack Warner who felt it would be a boost to the staging of games in the region.

The newest generation of artificial surfaces like the one at the Marvin Lee venue, combines the advantages of similar playing characteristics as natural turf, including increased player comfort and safety, with low maintenance and extended usage. The FIFA Quality Concept will identify those products of the newest generation specifically suited to football.

These fields are a dream to play on and long term cost is a fraction of a natural grass field. Not to mention it would break us of our silly habit of slide tackling.

Bricktop I think these fields would do wonders in Jamaica. First and foremost they provide a cosistent bounce for the player. I think this is one of the critical short commings of playing on bumpy pitches in the our region. A consistent bounce allows the player to learn to strike the ball accurately without our achilles heel of taking the second touch because we are not sure of the roll of the ball. I agree also that the cost is cheaper then grass in the long term, however it wont get away from slide tackles as you really dont get that cherry on these pitches. As a matter of fact the only negative I have with these is if the ground is not prepared with adequate drainage before its laid you have water settled or you may have water roll back which shorten the life of the turf.

              Karl! Here's something funny.

Question:"Jack" will you play the Reggae Boyz first on this field?"

"Jack's" Answer: "Are you mad. Do you think I want our #1 Caribbean rivals Jamaica to beat T&T in our first game on our brand new fieldIN T&T. You must be mad"

Jeez! You Trinis are really anxious to seethe 1-1 draw and the 2-nil win encounterbetween Jamaica's and Mexico U-17.

I won't be uploading any match since I won't have the time. And I already told Triniman that I would send him the matches. If he wanted to.

Btop, I don't think these new type artificial surfaces will cure the habit of sliding as they are supposed to be as close to the real thing as possible. i haven't seen the field in person myself but what I've heard is that the burns that resulted from sliding on the old style turf is no longer an issue.

The real plus is that games can be played in all types of conditions and in T&T which has a heavy rainy season the muddy conditions will be eliminated.

I play on these fields every other Sunday and although they are excellent surfaces it's still not something you want to slide tackle on. The rubber pellets that act as the dirt make it pretty difficult to make some of these slide tackles I see our clowns doing and the "grass" will still give you a nice likkle burn. I saw a yute do a face plant in it once and got one on his face. The fields are sweet but the only thing you have to get used to is that it doesn't have much give so when you plant your foot it's gonna stay planted. My hamstrings took a beating the first couple times I played on them.
