City in the red! Liverpool ace Gerrard rages at Mancini after tunnel bust-up

    By DOMINIC KING

Last updated at 12:42 AM on 12th January 2012

Steven Gerrard and Roberto Mancini became embroiled in a tunnel row as the Liverpool captain accused Manchester City’s manager of double standards.

Mancini was furious that a robust tackle from Glen Johnson on Joleon Lescott in injury time of the Carling Cup semi-final did not receive a red card.

The Italian felt it was 'worse' than the challenge for which Vincent Kompany was sent-off during Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United, earning him a four-match ban.

Confrontation: Steven Gerrard (left) and Roberto Mancini had words at full time

But Liverpool captain Gerrard, who scored the only goal of the game, was withering in his assessment of Mancini’s comments and felt his comments were inappropriate.

‘I’m surprised at Mancini,’ said Gerrard.

‘He had a go at Wayne Rooney trying to get one of his players sent off at the weekend, and now he is trying to get one of our players into trouble – I don’t think that’s right.’

Mancini, who will discover on Friday the severity of the injury David Silva suffered against United, confirmed he had exchanged words with Gerrard afterwards.
He said: ‘Gerrard came to me and said, ‘you said this,’ but that’s not important. Steven Gerrard can say what he wants, no problem. I said what I think. The tackle was worse than Vinny’s.’

Controversy: Mancini felt Glen Johnson (left) was late on Joleon Lescott

This is the first time since February 2008 that City have lost back-to-back home games and they were fortunate that Liverpool let them off the hook after bossing the opening stages.

City dominated the second period but lacked a cutting edge and Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish was thrilled with his side’s resilience.

‘In the second-half, after getting the goal advantage, we just battened down the hatches,’ he said. ‘Not too many teams have come here and not had goals against us, so it’s a fantastic effort by us.

‘It wasn’t the prettiest performance, but it didn’t fall short in terms of desire or commitment. Once we get ourselves in front, we were determined not to lose it.’

Fi once Mancini is correct. Johnson's tackle was dangerous. On the other hand Gerrard is correct as well ....

Here's to city winning 1-0 next week and the penalty shootout go on for days.

The problem is the inconsistency. If Kompany's was a red, then I agree Johnson's was a red too, but because there is no consistency from ref to ref, you have two very different outcomes.

we have to accept that refereeing is subjective and let it go at that.

Thats all it is until we have technology and who wants a 120 minutes game ,not including extra time.

Personally I see nothing wrong with the tackle as long as the opposition isnt hurt.Ridiculous to say you cant pursue the ball with your feet, the mitigating fact should be , is one hurt.

Players get hurt with out it being off your feet.

My position on this is pretty simple, use technology for what technology is good at, which is black and white decisions which reduces its application to basically line calls. Technology should not be used for judgement calls which is where we have to accept that refereeing is subjective.

However, I do believe that a referee standings board that shows the effectiveness of a ref based on post-match analysis would be a good idea. I don't remember where I read this proposal, but I recall it making a heap of sense to me. The good ones from the lower leagues get promoted, and the bad ones from the upper leagues get relegated. By now, Howard Webb would be in division 4 after all di money unu pay him. At the very least it will make the graft that Manu** pay out year in year out have a professional price to the refs. How much unu pay di ref fi Kompany red card? Nuff don't it?

While we know you are just trying to wind up Jangle, if this http://www.espncricinfo.com/england/...ry/549087.html
can happen in cricket with a lot less money in it, you wonder what happens in football especially with the refs. In cricket it is easier for an individual player to throw away his wicket or bowl badly to influence an outcome...although a defender could deliberately handle the ball etc. Anyway, we would be naive to think that the games are without corruption.
