  • Wise words from Doc Socrates; Pele Vs Maradonna debate

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZfye-hcIlg

    Just saw this video with Socrates (RIP) giving his opinion on the whose was the better;
between Pele V Maradonna debate. We'll never really get a definative answer between these two players who played in different eras's. But if you had to choose one to represent yr team, who would you go for?

    Pele every and anytime.

There is absolutly no comparison...he won 3!! THREE !! World Cups over a 12 year period. He also won his first at 17.

Maradonna is a distant third behind Zidane who is second.

Scaly, winning 3 world cups isn't a factor, well I don't think so. Why? Well ..... Camronesi of Italy has a world cup medal, Eusebio, Zico, Socrates, Best, Giggs, Yorke to name a few don't have a medal. That doesn't mean he is as good as any of the above.

I am shcoked that such a big BoyU fan like yourself does not include winning championships as part of the formula of greatness....
Marodonna was a great player who won A world cup Pele was A great player who won 3 !!

Winning championships and in footie the WC is the biggest and best has to count.

Carrick has won how many EPL titles? Yet I'd rather Gerrard in my. The Italian is the ideal example of the point I'm making. Giggs never played a World Cup. Does that mean Michael Bradley of the USA is better than Giggs?

My last point because I have to go meet someone.
Winning a Champioship puts an added value on to the player and his or her greatness.

Pele's di most balanced footballer to evah grace di stage, was di most instrumental and influential figure fi all 3 WC brasil won 58, 62 an 70; an wouldah won again 66 if not injured. Diego di same can be said but him ongle win one, aldough him had ah lesser supporting cast. Pele get fi mi vote ebrytime

contributing significantly to such titles must also account for something, no?

contributing significantly .... sure but saying winning trophies .... that can be misleading.

Would Brazil have been so successful if Maradonna had played in place of Pele for Brazil in those winning years, and Pele for Argentina?

I think Socrates said it right - it is a ridiculous argument (see banter between lazie and scaly - neither will win*). However, we are fans, and we reserve the right to be ridiculous, otherwise, how else would we tolerate Jangle?

Anyway, you asked the right question first time - who would you rather have in your side? And on that basis - Pele.

                            * Scaly is right though that in that championships do count for players who have those opportunities.
