Jamaica increased THEIR chances of reclaiming the Caribbean Youth Championship title yesterday with a 3-0 drubbing of Canada in their first of three Zone B quarter-final games at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
Dever Orgill opened the scoring from as early as 26 minutes in the first-half to give the Under-17s a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The matter was then settled four minutes from time when John-Ross Doyley scored in the 86th minute to double his team's lead then Kenniel Hyde added the third in the 90th minute to give Jamaica the well-needed three points.
Team coach, David Hunt, had nothing but praises for the efforts of his players and credited the win to good defending.
"The team played excellent defensive football by keeping position of the ball and playing our style of football, we had very good preparation and it showed in the second-half, as we were able to score to goals after totally dominating the final 25 minutes of the game." said Hunt.
booming with confidence
"So I must congratulate the players for an excellent performance."
Hunt, who was booming with confidence from his team's win was keen on noting that all is not over as they will be preparing for three more games, which include the final.
"It is not the end of the road we still have three games to go but our focus now is on Panama (which the team will next play on Wednesday)," he added.
The young Reggae Boyz were expected to be out of sorts after being told by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) their opponent had changed from Barbados to Canada and that they would be playing a day earlier.
A last-minute decision by the CFU placed Jamaica into a tougher zone which includes guest teams Mexico, Panama and Canada.
blessing in disguise
In commenting on the decision of the CFU to change Jamaica's group, Hunt said he sees the move as a blessing in disguise.
"I'm happy for the change made by the CFU because it gives us the opportunity to match-up against the teams that we will be playing against in the CONCACAF qualifiers, so to me it is a blessing in disguise," he said.</DIV>
