Ja to implement grass-roots football programme
Monday, August 15, 2011
Jamaica's football landscape will be poised to undergo fundamental changes with the implementation of a grass-roots football programme in the coming months.
Grass-roots football is the foundation on which the development of the sport is dependent, and is the stage that people derive their love for the game.
The main aim in establishing a national grass-roots programme is to give all people, girls and boys between the ages 6-12, opportunities to learn to play football and develop a love and passion for the sport. Playing then improves techniques and the intelligence of the game.
The grass-roots programme will be initiated with the staging of a FIFA Grass-roots Seminar beginning next Tuesday at 9:00 am at the offices of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) with the Opening Ceremony. Two FIFA Instructors Alvin Corneal and Leonard Lake will arrive in the island today to conduct the seminar which will include practical sessions at Sabina Park culminating in a Grass-roots festival with over 100 children at 3:00 pm at the same venue next Thursday.
Present and speaking at the launch tomorrow will be president of the JFF, Captain Horace Burrell: Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Olivia Grange; FIFA Instructors and Daryl Warner, development officer for the region. Wisynco, through its brands Bigga and Wata, has supported the seminar.
In keeping with the concept of the grass-roots programme, which is broad-based involvement in the sport, the seminar will have representatives from all parish associations; the Social Development Commission; the Ministry of Sports: the Ministry of Education; UNICEF; the Jamaica Olympic Committee; Special Olympics; the Disabilities Association; technical personnel from the federation; and Insports.
The introduction of the grass-roots programme alongside the coaching courses; the refereeing development programme; the construction of the technical centre marks the continued emphasis on developmental programmes by the JFF.
