Cummings ends four-month goal drought

JAMAICA'S Omar Cummings ended his four-month goal drought Friday night in the US Major League Soccer (MLS) when he struck in the 79th minute for Colorado Rapids to beat Columbus Crew 2-0 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Denver.
Cummings' combination with Sanna Nyassi all night finally paid off when the Gambian played him in. He tapped in from inside the penalty area for his third goal of the season from 17 matches. The 29-year-old Jamaican striker has not scored since April 3 against DC United.
In post-games comments, Mullings noted that the goal has boosted his self-belief.
"It just means more confidence, more momentum going into the next game. Knowing that you are winning games and scoring goals, especially going away (next weekend) it means good confidence for the team," he explained.
Man of the match Brian Mullan opened the scoring in the 54th minute with a beauty. Scoring his first-ever goal for the Rapids, the 33-year-old American crashed the ball high into the roof of the net.
Added Cummings: "Everyone is scoring goals; to see Sanna and Pablo (Mastroeni) score last week, to me and Brian getting it this week; so you have multiple scorers and just scoring a lot of goals is confidence for any team."
Colorado Rapids are in fourth place in the overall standing of the MLS with 37 points, with Cummings boasting six assists, and taking 27 shots with nine of them on goal.
Breaking the goal drought means that Cummings is now scoring every 397 minutes this season. But that is way below last season when he was finding the net every 177 minutes for his 14 goals.
Jamaicans Dane Richards of New York Red Bulls and Khari Stephenson of San Jose Earthquakes have also scored three goals each so far this season, with O'Brian White of Seattle Sounders and Andy Williams of Real Salt Lake on two goals apiece.
The Colorado Rapids will visit the Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, August 13 to take on San Jose Earthquakes, the team of 30-year-old Stephenson.
Four Jamaicans are plying their trade in the MLS.
