  • Gerrard blow for Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard suffers groin infection and will be sidelined until September

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be kept under observation in hospital for “several days” after being ruled out of the start of the season with an infection related to the groin problem which has plagued him for six months.

The 31 year-old, already due to miss England’s friendly with Holland on Aug 10, is now a major doubt for the Euro 2012 qualifiers away to Bulgaria on Sep 2 and at home to Wales four days later.

Liverpool , meanwhile, will have to cope without their captain for their first three games of the season, at home to Sunderland and Bolton and away at Arsenal.

“Steven Gerrard today began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem,” Liverpool said yesterday. “He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed.

“The player will then return to Melwood to continue his rehabilitation programme and is expected to be available for selection in September.”

Gerrard has been troubled by the injury since Liverpool’s win against Chelsea on Feb 6. He endured painkilling injections to enable him to face Manchester United a month later but then underwent two operations in a bid to cure the problem, which limited him to just 21 Premier League games last season.
