Sunderland 2-0 Coventry
Sunderland shrugged off the challenge of Coventry to move two points off a top six spot.
Dwight Yorke planted a firm close-range header past keeper Luke Steele in the 19th minute to put the home side ahead.
Coventry had plenty of possession but lacked a cutting edge as did their former striker Stern John, who struggled for the Black Cats.
But Carlos Edwards struck a stunning strike from 25 yards in the closing stages to wrap up Sunderland's win.
Interview: Sunderland striker Stern John
# Sunderland boss Roy Keane:
"I thought Yorkie was different class and he has been for the past few games now.
"His experience is vital for usand he's had the added bonus of notching a few goals in the last few games.
"I'm delighted with Yorkie and delighted with the win. Three points, clean sheet and we move on."
# Coventry caretaker boss Adrian Heath:
"We had the best chances and the most clear-cut chances, so I'm disappointed with that.
"But I thought it was a terrific performance, other than the most important thing, scoring goals.
"The second goal came at a time when we were trying to force the issue, but I can still take a lot of positives from the game."
