D.C. United news & notes: Jamaican trialist, concussion, Dejan Jakovic, Fred, player ratings, women’s team
    By Steven Goff

*D.C. United is looking at another player from Jamaican club Portmore: right back/wing Eric Vernan. He is on trial this week. The international signing window opens Friday. Vernan’s arrival is consistent with General Manager Dave Kasper’s comments to the Insider last week that United was in the market for a right back, a slot depleted by Jed Zayner’s injuries. The latest setback was knee surgery, which will sideline him for about another month.

Vernan played in all four of Jamaican’s matches at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The trial with DCU was arranged by former Jamaican international and MLS forward Damani Ralph. Portmore’s Adrian Reid, a center back, was recently in camp but, if United pursues him, it probably wouldn’t happen until after the season.

*Rookie forward Blake Brettschneider is recovering from a concussion suffered Saturday at New York. “He got whacked pretty good,” Coach Ben Olsen said. “He didn’t remember much about the game. I told him this morning he scored three goals. He didn’t think that was very funny.”

On a serious note, Olsen added: “We wait and make sure we are smart with him.”

Devon McTavish, Santino Quaranta and Brandon Barklage remain out with concussions.

    For much more.....

*Defender Dejan Jakovic has returned to full-time training, but after sitting out since late May, his availability this weekend at FC Dallas remains unclear.

*Brazilian midfielder Fred is spending his final week with United before transferring to Australian club Melbourne Heart.
