  • The ref tried really hard to tief the US Women

For the forumites who were refs what does the rule say when taking a penalty? Can the goalkeeper move from side to side but not on and off the line? Hope Solo moved side to sde isn't that legal?

Fantastic win for the Women ! One of the best WC matches ever Men or Women !

Yes, the GK can move side to side but should not leave the line until the ball is kicked.

Anyway, I saw years ago when the referee allowed the US GK Scurry I think was her name to make about three steps forward before the kick was taken to stop China winning the WC which was played in the US. This is the same match in which Brandi Chastain (ope it is the right name here) took off her shirt while celebrating.

Ii thought China was cheated back then too.

I did not watch the full match, but saw the latter part on ESPN late last night. I was happy the USA won as Brazil instead of playing good football, started resorting to too much "gameswomanship". I hate that coming from any team.

Scaly, did you not see the American player encroaching? I think ppl accusing the ref is going way too far now. Especially with the former US players fueling the fire.

I brought this up earlier on the forum....how all controversy related to enchroachment can be eliminated.

If the penalty kick goes into the net, it is a goal.

If the penalty kick fails for any reason, the ball is dead, and the defensive team gets a goal kick.

I also mentioned that when penalty kicks are used as a tiebreaker, the goalkeeper should be allowed to move forward when the referee signals the shooter to proceed.

While I agree with you, unfortunately that is not the rule. Yes, I think the GK is at an unfair advantage as he/she cannot be fast enough to dive in the correct direction when the shot is taken. For this reason, GKs have to decide on a direction to dive and hope they guess right.

I would not be opposed to a rule which allows the GK to take one or two steps forward to protect their goal.

Isn't that the point? Hence the reference to "penalty"?
