Mexico's Copa America squad drops 8 players for misconduct

    Published June 28, 2011

Mexico City – Eight players were dropped from the Mexican squad taking part in the Copa America soccer tournament over their alleged hiring of prostitutes during the team's recent stay in Ecuador, Mexico's soccer federation announced Tuesday.

Israel Jimenez, Nestor Vidrio, David Cabrera, Jorge Hernandez, Jonathan dos Santos, Marco Fabian, Javier Cortes and Nestor Calderon were suspended for six months and fined 50,000 pesos ($4,347) each, national team commission chairman Hector Gonzalez Iñarritu said.

Declining to offer any details about the episode, Gonzalez Iñarritu said the players acknowledged their mistake and had apologized to their teammates.

"They are very embarrassed and perhaps this is an opportunity to grow, because they are very young," he said.

Gonzalez Iñarritu said the suspensions would not hurt the team's prospects in the Copa America tournament, as only one of the eight players sent home was a starter.

Argentina is hosting this year's competition. The Mexican squad's first match is a July 4 contest with Chile.
