WORKS and Transport Minister "set about to deceive the people of Trinidad and Tobago" by resigning from the post of FIFA vice president in the face of a negative report from the Ethics Committee of the world football governing body, according to the Opposition People's National Movement.
In a statement issued yesterday, the party reiterated its call for Warner to resign or be fired by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar "to save face and reputation" of the country.
The party made reference to a 17-page report, first published in the British press, which found that there was "comprehensive, convincing and overwhelming evidence" that former FIFA presidential candidate Qatari Mohamed Bin Hamman and Warner colluded to bribe the Caribbean Football Association to vote for Bin Hamman in the June 1 FIFA presidential election.
"We are of the view that Mr Jack Warner participated in the Ethics Committee's process. He received the FIFA report on 14th June 2011. He was given the option to be heard. He refused. On the 17th June 2011, he reacted by his resignation," the party stated in a media release.
"Having done so, he set about to deceive the people of Trinidad and Tobago. He sought to give the impression that he chose to serve us, out of pure love and affection," the statement added.
The statement said that Warner's "apparent voluntary resignation...was merely a ruse to give the false impression" that he was "cleared of all allegations by FIFA".
It stated that this was done in order to facilitate Warner's continued control and influence in local football and also to retain his position in the Cabinet and Government.
The party recalled that one year ago, its political leader Dr Keith Rowley, had called upon Warner to chose between football and government but he did not.
