Is just one game, an important game but as i said before the game the important thing was to try and cement the style in a high pressure game, i saw the weaknesses with the style once the pace lifted as in the honduras game, this thing needs a lot more work, but we are just starting, so ease up a little we saw definitive improvement in every area of the ball game.
Four key points.
Passing possession style in a pressure game
How to play this style at a faster speed when you play better opponents, the truth is some of our players cannot handle that style at that speed, their first touch is poor and some were also also nervous, this was a game of contrasting styles and US won as they played their game, they pressured us and took over the possession game completely by 3/4's of the first half; US is too fit and run too hard for us to play lazy man style possession ball, the ball has to move faster between our players in order to make that effective versus the US.
Defensive adaptation
US was finding all kinds of space to run and move the ball, we did not adapt at all, we couldn't even figure how to get back to fundamental man to man in space defending, they exploited the Jamaican scheme mercilessly and we could not react in the first in transition or even in the second, that is Tappa fault, that is his job to change the game and figure a way to counter and gain an advantage after seeing what the US did in the first half.
Leadership on the field
Where was the leader or leaders, where was the passion, marshall on the back four would have made a serious difference in the passion of the defending against this big reputation team as he has seen it all and has plenty of passion and leadership when the going gets rough!
We stopped running off the ball
Midway the first half I saw the writing on the wall, we were not moving, guys were waiting for balls to come to them and US was anticipating and picking, much like we had done in the previous games.
Good tournament overall we saw some good stuff, I would be almost ok if we really scared the hell out of the us and lost, but we did not do that. how much times do we have to hear the utter contempt of these fans and commentators who believe their team is fundamentally superior to ours and we can not get it up in response to that to organize a formidable response when it counts.
Again we need to continue down this road it is the right road, we need to improve the passing at speed/less touches/less thinking and more instinctive this comes with time and playing together.
On the defense we definitely have seen the way, we need more of the same.
We need more leadership on the field more passion and last but not least more practice against better teams, that will not come until we start winning against the uS and Mexico, look at the games Mexico gets on a consistent basis, that is what we need.
Tappa keep benchmarking, measurement of where we are and constant analysis of those results versus where we are going is the only way to go, good improvement but lots more needed!!!
