The former Metz centre-half appeared in all three of the USA's matches at the World Cup in Germany last summer which boosted his profile and he is set to sign on loan until the end of the season. Born in Washington DC to Nigerian parents, Onyewu played college football for two years before joining French side Metz in 2002. He made little impact with the Lorraine club and was loaned to Belgians La Louviere in 2003 and Standard Liege a year later. His move to Liege was made permanent soon afterwards and he has since forged a strong reputation for his strength and aerial ability, being voted the Jupiler League's foreign player of the year in 2005. Last season was his most successful with the club as they claimed second place in the division, behind Anderlecht. Onyewu was part of the US team that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005 before featuring in last summer's World cup. His performances in Germany led to his being voted the US Soccer Federation's Soccer Athlete of the Year for 2006. The commanding centre-half, whose nickname is 'Gooch', has been linked with moves to Middlesbrough and Chelsea, among others, since last summer and was widely tipped to be joining Marseille before United made their move.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></DIV>

I think that Gooch's agent is trying to spark some kind of bidding war or something.

Hopefully it doesn't come back to bite him and make him have to wait until summer for the move.

        To wherever that may be...

Yeah Brian McBride I think is a great example for all players from CONCACAF of how to maximize one's potential. He just kept plugging away until he found the perfect fit.

It's funny because during the WC he was crap from game 1 through game 3. Then early in the fall it was found that he had a virus that was keeping him tired all the time from a diseased tooth. (no I am not making that up....a diseased tooth) I thought it was all bs and that he just was not admitting that he was at the end of his days. Well lo and behold when he had the tooth removed he started scoring goals again.

I guess he'll be one of those players who retire at 36. Man I tell you. Those big bruising strikers have the longest shelf life when it comes to football. Landon Donovan should beg McBridefor some man lessons.- T.K.

ONYEWU: ST. JAMES THE PLACE FOR ME

Newcastle defender Oguchi Onyewu believes he made the right choice by agreeing to a loan deal with the currently middling, but esteemed Premiership club.

A day before the transfer window closed, he joined from Standard Liege, ending months of speculation as to where the American international would sign.

US Soccer's Player of the Year will be on Tyneside for at least five months with the possibility of making the arrangement permanent at the end of the season.

"Out of all the possibilities, this was probably the best in terms of giving me a chance to grow as a player and the chance to make an immediate impact on the team," Onyewu told YA.
