The Black Cats agreed terms with their Championship rivals over the weekend for John and Keane has moved quickly to conclude a deal for the 30-year-old.
The Trinidad and Tobago frontman had a medical on Wearside on Monday and becomes Keane's sixth January recruit.
"We have agreed a deal for Stern John," said Keane. "We wanted somebody up front with a physical presence."
John scored 29 goals in 74 starts for Coventry but fell out of favour at the Ricoh Arena this season.
He spent two months on loan at Derby between September and November, although he failed to score in seven appearances, but will now join countrymen Carlos Edwards and Dwight Yorke at the Stadium of Light. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
