    Reggae Boyz eye Beckford
    Andre Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter

    Jermaine Beckford

Everton striker Jermaine Beckford is one of several international players being eyed by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) in its efforts to widen the pool of players for the national senior programme.

West Ham prodigy Zavon Hines and Birmingham City product Luke Hubbard are also among the players being scouted and approached by JFF officials as the federation stretches its tentacles beyond the island's shores in a continued effort to secure more talent ahead of the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign later this year.

Beckford, 27, has scored seven goals in his first season with Everton after making a big switch last summer from Leeds United, for which he had scored a famous FA Cup Third Round goal that knocked Manchester United out of the competition in the 2009-2010 season.

According to sources close to the discussions, Beckford is said to be seriously considering the idea but will not be able to make a commitment to the Jamaican programme until later this year due to family reasons.
Hines, 22, another attacking player who was actually born in Jamaica but has represented England at the Under-21 level, is expected to decide on his future one way or the other in a matter of days, while Hubbard, a midfielder who actually plays in the Birmingham City reserve team, has already filed his citizenship application and should figure for the Reggae Boyz soon.

Nathan Smith, a 24-year-old left back with English League One team Yeovil Town, has also committed fully to the programme and has filed his citizenship application with local authorities.

The situation is slightly different with German-born Daniel Gordon, who represents Rot-Wei§ Oberhausen in Bundesliga 2. Twenty-six year-old Gordon, who has represented top-flight German clubs VfL Bochum II and Borussia Dortmund, is said to be extremely excited by the offer but is looking to sort out his club situation this summer before making a commitment as he is currently a free agent.

Another player who was reportedly contacted but cannot make a commitment at this point despite being interested is Reading FC's Jobi McNuff, who has a surgery scheduled for this summer.

JFF general secretary Horace Reid confirmed that discussions were under way with several players and underlined the importance of each player showing a level of commitment to the programme.

"A number of players have expressed an interest in representing Jamaica and we have also reached out to some. In most instances it's very preliminary and I'm not sure if I can confirm any names at this point but, yes, we are looking, we have been recruiting and the scouting process in ongoing," said Reid. "Except for Humphrey, nothing is concrete at this point."

"The players who do come here must show a level of commitment and professionalism; well, you expect a certain level of professionalism from the European players to begin with but more so, we will be looking for those who are truly committed to the country and that is why the recruiting process is so important," Reid added. Noted UK-based player-agent Romel Wallen, who is close to a number of the players involved, gave an insight on the situation. "Jermaine Beckford would like to be considered in the near future. Same for Jobi Mcnuff and Daniel Gordon. For various reasons, these players are unable to commit to playing this summer," said Wallen, who represents Pro-Goals Sports Management.

My Campaign Has Paid Off !

I am glad my campaign has paid off. Now I hope Daniel can sign with a club ASAP.

Daniel Gordon is exactly what the back end of the Reggae Boyz lineup needs....
a smart, disciplined player who looks to make a good pass and not do something stupid with the ball. And, if someone from Jamaica can hit him in the head with a corner kick, that would be a bonus.

I have forwarded the STAR article to my friend in Oberhausen. I think he will be warming up for a big party for the German Cup final scheduled for tomorrow between Schalke 04 (Bundesliga 1) and MSV Duisburg (Bundesliga 2)

My friend hates Duisburg, and Galsenkirchen, where Schalke 04 is located, is 60 miles from Oberhausen.

Oberhausen forward Ronny Konig has signed a two-year contract with Bundesliga 2 club Erzebirge Aue. Aue finished fifth in Bundesliga 2 this season.

I'm hoping Daniel can get a deal worked out in time to be placed on the training camp squad.

Bruce, big up yuhself! You have been steadfast in your campaign for this player. I have been copied on a few of the emails you have sent to the JFF. Good to see your efforts were not in vain.

Hopefully Daniel can commit to the program. You Mr Bruce are a true Reggae Boyz fan.

          Respect

I wonder what, if anything, JFF knew about Daniel Gordon before I e-mailed them. My guess is they heard about him, but did not know much, and when I sent them my scouting report, JFF decided to investigate.

Which means they probably became aware of Gordon when I first posted about him here 2 and a half years ago.

You are right, Zeppo. But I have an Internet buddy who is an Oberhausen season ticket holder, I watched Oberhausen's games on atdhenet, and gave a scouting report on Daniel, and posted it here many times.

Possibly. I do remember now you were the one who first made it known. Bruce however kept the campaign going and even sent emails to the JFF admin on it. You deserve some credit too as if it were not for you, maybe the campaign would not have been started by Bruce.

I just happened to come across Gordon (and the fact that he was eligible for Jamaica) by chance. Back then he was still playing for Borussia Dortmund's reserve team, so I seriously doubt that the JFF would have known who he was. And as we all know, it's not the most "together" organization in the world.

No doubt Bruce put in a lot of hard work with e-mails and reports (although I believe Pbanta was the first forumite to send off an e-mail). However, those things didn't start to happen until nearly a full 2 years after I had started the first thread on him (just follow the timeline in it). And as soon as I did that the news was immediately copied and posted on the other Reggae Boyz forum. So at that point the word was out.

Furthermore, I don't doubt you for a second about people in the JFF reading this forum. I know for a fact that many American coaches and top figures in the USSF regularly follow BigSoccer.com.

Bruce, I am disappointed that Daniel Gordon is postponing the chance to suit up for the ReggaeBoyz. I know he has to find a team but that's what agents are for and...playing for the Boyz in the Gold Cup...this would be an opportunity for him to upgrade his resume by adding the fact that he is an international player. I hope he reconsiders and then fly to Brasil to join the Boyz training camp.

It's beyond me why an injury-free player would NOT jump at the chance to rep his country and play international ball!

Not all players use agents you Farmah. Some feel they can play ball and do do the club hunting/negotiations themselves. Not saying that is the case with Daniel, but if it is, then I can understand.

Also, it is not unheard of for some teams to want prospective players like Daniel to visit their clubs on trial. If that happens he would have to make himself available at short notice.
