Trophy drought is embarrassing! I wouldn't blame Cesc if he quit Arsenal, blasts Sagna

Bacary Sagna says he would understand if Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas quit the Emirates in search of silverware this summer.

Sagna said the club had 'failed' this season after coming up short in the Carling Cup, the FA Cup and the Champions League, and they are almost certain to lose out in the Barclays Premier League title race to Manchester United, who they face at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners trail United by nine points and look set to extend their trophy drought to six years.

Not again: Cesc Fabregas cannot believe it after Arsenal throw another lead away in a recent defeat at Bolton

Star man and skipper Fabregas was courted by his home town club Barcelona last summer and full-back Sagna accepts the Spain midfielder's head could be turned by an offer from a club with better prospects of winning titles than Arsenal.

He told the News of the World: 'I would understand if Cesc leaves. He has been here at Arsenal for a long time and he wants to win trophies. As professionals we want to be successful and win cups and titles but we haven't won a thing for six years.'

The closest Arsenal have come this season was in the Carling Cup, where they suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Birmingham in the final at Wembley after a late defensive mix-up gifted the Blues a winner.

Hitting out: Bacary Sagna says this season has been one of the worse for the Gunners and blames the players

Sagna admitted the campaign had been a bad one for the Gunners and added: 'It's embarrassing to be part of a team that hasn't won a trophy for six years. We failed.

'It's not the manager's fault, it's the players'. Some people say Arsene Wenger's not doing well, but he doesn't play. Everyone was sad at Bolton (where Arsenal lost last Sunday). We have to be stronger in battle, that's what we said after the game last Sunday.

'We know we are not a bad team. We have the quality to finish first, but we lost. This is the fault of the players - we have failed.'

Leading by example: Petit (left) believes Arsenal lack leaders like Tony Adams (right)

Meanwhile former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has warned Wenger that he must strengthen his squad this summer if he is to keep hold of captain Fabregas beyond the end of the season.
The Frenchman who won the league and cup double in 1998 insisted:
'You look at the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Samir Nasri. They are so talented but what they do not have is the attitude of winners.
'They need a big leader. And he (Wenger) needs to bring in two or three players. We had so many 'winners' when I was at the club - Tony Adams, Martin Keown, people like that.'
Petit who later left Arsenal to join Spanish giants Barcelona warned:
'The danger is that they will get used to not winning. History only remembers winners. Cesc Fabregas said recently that many of the players are fed up with the situation.
'Many of the players there don not have the mentality you need.'

"It therefore is useless and pointless, unless it is for share malice and victimisation to arrest and charge a 92-year-old man for such a simple offence. There is nothing morally wrong with this man smoking a spliff; the only thing wrong is that it is still on the law books," said Chevannes.
