  • VIDEO: Valencia CF looking to build football academy in Jama

Top Spanish club Valencia CF plan to establish a football academy in Jamaica by 2012, at the end of their three-year local football camp, revealed Carlos De Lera, the club's director of sports operation.
De Lera was speaking at a media briefing at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston yesterday, for the second staging of the Next Generation Valencia Easter Football camp slated for Monday, April 16-20 at Sabina Park.

"I think next year after the camp, if everything looks like now, the idea is this, in 2012 to open here, a Valencia football academy," De Lera told the Observer.
"We are very proud of our activities. We think we are doing a good job. We have a good methodology. But we will have to control the attitude and progress of the players and possibly, some of them might move to our academy," he added.
Valencia will be setting up another academy in Bermuda in October to add to the ones in Egypt and Japan.
Valencia are currently third in the Spanish La Liga on 60 points, inclusive of 18 wins, six draws and seven defeats. They are 16 points behind second-placed Real Madrid and 24 points adrift of leaders Barcelona on 84 points.
De Lera will be accompanied by five Valencia coaches, in Juan Da Silva, Jose Bagues, David Cercos, Alfredo Lopez and Xavier Gimeno for the Next Generation Valencia camp.
"The last edition was a very good experience for us. Our philosophy is to work hard with the people who are here supporting the camp," said De Lera.
The camp will comprise three, five-day intensive sessions. The first for 100 kids ages 7-11; the second will be kids ages 12-17 and the third for youth coaches.
In all 180 participants will be involved and according to Andre Virtue, director of the Next Generation Camp, the focus will be more on tactics.
"We will be addressing the tactical deficiency. Technically we are sound, physically we are strong. But tactically we are short in that area," said Virtue.
The camp will also be focusing on developing coaches so as to sustain what is taught to the youngsters.
"We will be helping to prepare our local coaches so that they can understand the methodology. At least 30 coaches will be there observing the Valencia coaches and get practical demonstrations," noted Virtue.
Following the camp last year, Martin Davis and King Kaya Beckford took up scholarships to the Valencia Academy in Spain.
Davis, 12, was accepted to the Valencia Academy to work with the Under-17 second team, while Beckford joined the E1 Valencia Academy. Both boys attended the prestigious Caxton College, a British curriculum school considered to be one of the best British schools in Spain with excellent academic results and exceptional educational and sporting facilities.
The teenagers were two of four local youngsters who emerged as the top performers from among the 120 participants at the Valencia Next Generation Football Camp.
The other two scholarship recipients were female Nicole Broderick and Zhelano Barnes. Both should be joining their colleague this season in Spain.
