FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
With ten weeks to the start of the FIFA Under 17 World Cup on June 18, the technical staff has called the first camp aimed at beginning the preparation for Jamaica's first participation on the world stage of football in ten years.
Since the qualification of the Jamaica National squad in February, the technical staff has looked at seventy-five players through two training camps and games played. The Federation used this period to make it clear to parishes and clubs that the door was open to interested and qualified players to impress the coaching staff. The Federation is pleased with the response of all. The JFF in this period has also encouraged and received interest from overseas based players in the age category to be a part of the squad and has facilitated these interests.
In finalizing the preparation regime and schedule the Federation remains extremely constrained by limited resources and continues to call on corporate Jamaica and government to match the effort and sacrifice of the players in qualifying with the support required to make a good showing in Mexico. A good showing will benefit not only the players but Jamaica and the football programme. The cost of the overseas training camp, local camps and participation at the World Cup in Mexico exceeds $10M. It is critical for our team that these funds be raised
The technical staff has outlined the components necessary to ensure proper preparation. This includes week-end and weekly camps; games at the local level; an overseas training camp and a minimum of four overseas games. In addition the JFF will continue to provide the educational support for the players through the input of the tutors who have been working with the players to date
The preparation schedule is also being influenced by the fact that a number of players will be taking CXC and internal examinations during the months of May and June. The JFF remains respectful of the need for the players to maximize their overall development by paying the necessary attention to their academic work
Training sessions will be held as follows:
Saturday, April 9 - 7:00am St. Georges, Winchester Park
Saturday, April 9 - 4:00pm St Georges, Winchester Park
Sunday, April 10 - 7:00am UWI, Mona Bowl
Attached please see the list of invited players to camp beginning Friday, April 8.
