  • Carew seals Villa switch

<P class=big>Aston Villa have completed the signing of Norway striker John Carew from Lyon.<P nd="1">The 27-year-old has arrived as part of the deal which took Milan Baros to France.<P nd="2">Carew has penned a three-and-half year deal at Villa Park.

"I've played in many places in Europe, but not in the Premiership, so I'm looking forward to the challenge here," Carew told Villa's website. <P nd="4">"Martin O'Neill is a great manager, very well respected, and I'm really looking forward to working with him. <P nd="5">"I don't know too much about the squad here, but I do know some of the players I have played against - especially the defenders. <P nd="6">"Aston Villa is a big English club and I've always known about the team. There is a big interest in the team in my country Norway, so I'm really happy to be here. <P nd="7">"I've been lucky to play for big teams, in Spain and Italy especially. I've just been playing in France - with the French champions. So I've played for some good teams and with some of the best players in the world. Now I have a big challenge and I'm really looking forward to it. <P nd="8">"It is always a challenge when you come to a new environment and up until now it's always gone very well for me. I've enjoyed myself wherever I've been and I've played with some big players."

<P nd="9">England will be the sixth country of Carew's career - having already plied his trade in Norway, Spain, Italy, Turkeyand France.

    RE: Carew seals Villa switch

This has to be the dumbest move by any player in football. The man left Lyon, a club with a chance of winning the Champions League this season for ... Aston Villa? Is this dude for real?

He may not have had much choice...plus...he wasn't getting any game at Lyon as it was. This is a good signing for Villa and I suspect that Carew will do well in England...certainly better than he's done elsewhere. His physical size and speed will make him adapt quickly. As for Baros, I am expecting him to perform repectably in France.

Wasn't getting game in France? I saw him playing for them in the Champions League against Real and even the Real fans were applauding his display.

True - but while he started last season as a regular, that has not been the case this year. The RM game in November was the only game since October that he played a full 90.

Yes - Houllier did sign Baros at Liverpool as a youth player and brought him through that to the first team ranks. I don't think you should conclude that Carew *wanted* to leave Lyon. Many times these decisions are made starkly clear to the players, e.g. "Leave and play, or stay here and warm the bench". Either way, without knowing the facts, you have to give the player's judgement the benefit of the doubt.
