  • Daniel Gordon Could Play Today (friday)

Daniel Gordon could be back in Rotweiss Oberhausen's lineup today in a match at 1860 Munich. The game starts at 12 noon US Eastern time and could be watched at www.atdhenet.tv

Gordon, who has been out with a knee injury since October, played in a friendly match against a beer league team last week, and looked good, according to Oberhausen's fan forum.

Oberhausen is in 15th place in Germany's Bundesliga 2, tied with Karlsruhe, but ahead of a relegation playoff by a goal difference of one. There are ten games remaining in the schedule.

Gordon will be suspended one game if he recieves a yellow card. He had four yellow cards before his injury.

Bruce, what is a "beer league team"? Is this a side made up from regulars at a local bar?
If that is the case, then we may question Daniel's readiness for international football.

Germany has five divisions. The first two (Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2) are national leagues.

The other three divisions are a patchwork of regional leagues. There is a playoff to determine which teams get promoted. I just call them beer leagues.

"Beer League" is a hockey term I use for a really crappy league.

In US pro hockey, there's the NHL, then the AHL (Milwaukee) where all players are a phone call away from the NHL. Every AHL team is the direct development team of an NHL team. Some AHL teams are fully or partially owned by an NHL team.

Milwaukee is the farm team to the NHL Nashville Predators. There's a great story going on in Nashville. Blake Geoffrion, just called up from Milwaukee, has scored two goals in his first three games.

Geoffrion is the first fourth-generation player in the history of the NHL.
His great-grandfather, Howie Morenz, was a superstar with Montreal in the 1920's and 1930's. His grandfather, Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, was also a superstar with Montreal in the 1950s and 1960s. Both are in the Hall Of Fame. Blake's father, Dan Geoffrion, played 3 years in the NHL.

There are three third-level leagues (Central, East Coast, and Southern Pro. Then, there are at least two $#!+ leagues below that.

There are also several junior (U-20) leagues, the best being the Western League, Ontario League, and Quebec League. Players get drafted by NHL teams. All three leagues are well-run.

There are two more junior leagues in the USA, the US Hockey League, and the North American Hockey League. The next step for the players is a Division 1 college scholarship.
