D.C. United acquires forward Charlie Davies

D.C. United announced today that the club has acquired forward Charlie Davies. The Black-and-Red have signed the striker to a loan deal from French side FC Sochaux for the 2011 season. The club used its position in the MLS allocation ranking to acquire the forward. United will hold a press conference in the Volkswagen Lounge at RFK Stadium today at 2:00 p.m. to introduce Davies alongside President and CEO Kevin Payne, General Manager Dave Kasper, and Head Coach Ben Olsen. The press conference will be streamed live on dcunited.com.

“We are really pleased to have concluded a deal that will bring Charlie to United,” said General Manager Dave Kasper. “Charlie spent 10 days with us in our first pre-season camp and underwent a full battery of physical and medical testing. He simply looks terrific. Coming in, we weren’t sure where he would be, but he’s great physically, has impressed with his mental approach and we’re excited to see him on the field with us this season.”

Potential USA forward for the 2010 world cup squad who had a terrible car accident which consequently took him out of the world cup. He was on a tear before that car accident which took the life of one girl while another girl is still rehabbing. It's an amazing quick turn around for Charlie Davis and I wish him all the best at DC United.

Makes me wonder though, that if Charlie Davis could be given the medical care to bring him back so quickly (he sustained quite a few fractures in his legs and arms), why could Damani Ralph get the same medical care? Granted, Damani had an ACL injury (I think) but I'm left to believe that his doctors botched his surgeries!

D.C. United says Charlie Davies is 'very close' to starting form

D.C. United's acquisition of Charlie Davies promises to energize a melancholy fan base, boost merchandise and ticket sales and provide an inspiring narrative that transcends soccer.

Beyond the ancillary benefits, however, a vital question remains unanswered, and might remain unresolved for some time: Can he play at a high level again?

The fact of the matter is, since his recovery from severe injuries suffered in a car accident in Arlington in October 2009, Davies hasn't appeared in a first-division match. Now he is being asked to help rejuvenate a club that set the MLS record for fewest goals in a season last year and endured its worst campaign ever.

Davies Resolved to Rebuild a Career

Charlie Davies awakened in a daze with 25 staples down his abdomen and thought he was in a hostel in Honduras, where bandits were harvesting his organs.

The truth was hardly more comforting: in the early morning of Oct. 13, 2009, after breaking curfew with the United States national team, Davies had been a passenger in a horrible automobile accident in Northern Virginia. The car had hit a guardrail and split in half. Another passenger died. The driver later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and maiming while driving intoxicated.
