  • Gama To Lead u-20's

The Cubans have a saying: "Bebe que no llora no mama leche." Translated as: The baby who doesn't cry doesn't suck milk...or the squeaky wheel get the grease. A few months (or some weeks) ago, Gama went to the Jamaican press and yearned to once again be back in Jamaica where he can again eat "ackee and salt fish and dumplins." He also articulated his love for Jamaica and its people. Now see what a public outburst can bringforth:

Brazilian Gama to lead U-20s into battle

BRAZILIAN coach Walter Gama will take charge of Jamaica's National Under-20 football team leading into the World Cup Qualifiers set for March 28 to April 10 in Guatemala.

With youth coach Wendell Downswell stepping aside to concentrate on the National Under-17s, the Under-20s were left in the hands of his inexperienced assistant Andrew Edwards of St Elizabeth Technical High School.

But the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) confirmed yesterday that Gama — a former assistant to Rene Simoes — will have his third stint as Jamaican coach.

JFF boss Captain Horace Burrell said: "Everybody saw the need for it. Gama is going to be working with the Jamaica coach in Brazil, then he will take the lead role at the tournament."

The Under-20s are scheduled to leave early March for a two-week training stint in Brazil then travel straight to Guatemala for the CONCACAF Championship, which serves as a FIFA World Cup Qualifier.
"He is a very experienced coach who assisted our youth teams, the only two times we qualified, and therefore, we are very fortunate to have him agree to assist, and it goes to show the love that the Brazilians have for the people of Jamaica," said Burrell.

Gama, 65, will be serving his third stint after first assisting Simoes between 1998-2000. He then returned in 2008 and his primary responsibility was to co-ordinate the preparation of all of the Youth teams as well as the Women's programme.

On Friday, Jamaica Under-20s were drawn in Group A alongside hosts Guatemala and Honduras for the Championship which will be between March 28 and April 10.

Meanwhile, Burrell was optimistic but cautious about Jamaica's chances of advancing from the group.

"The draw is very interesting. We have a talented pool of players and once they give their best we will be able to come out of the group. We are playing against the hosts and Honduras, so our group on paper is a difficult one," he told the Sunday Observer.

Four teams from the 12-team tournament will qualify for the FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Colombia between July 29 and August 20.
Defending champions Costa Rica head Group C and will play Canada and Guadeloupe.

Five-time champions Mexico were drawn alongside Caribbean teams Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago in Group D. The United States are paired with Panama and Suriname in Group B.

It is great that he is involved. No one has been close to doing as well with our youth teams as him. Hopefully the local coach is involved in the process and not simply pushed to the side.
