Stoke manager Tony Pulis is happy to let striker Ricardo Fuller leave if the player wants one final pay-day to secure his future.
Pulis claims Sunderland have made a bid for the 31-year-old - denied by the Black Cats - and that Fuller has asked to speak to the Wearsiders.
The Potters boss can understand why the Jamaica international, whose contract expires at the end of next season, would want to maximise his earning potential in the final years of his top-flight career.
And he will leave with his blessing if a deal can be struck - although Pulis will be equally happy should the player remain.
"He has got a life after football to think about and Ric's certainly not one of those who will be going into management or coaching or anything like that," said the manager.
"Ric's Ric. He's a different animal - I think he's talking about buying nightclubs, discos and music centres and all that.
"He has the opportunity to do very well for himself and as a manager, he's not only a player of mine, he's a friend and you have to help them as well.
"It's been a very good relationship. We've had our moments together - I'd be telling lies if I said we hadn't had arguments and fall-outs over the years.
"But he's a good lad and I have a lot of respect for him.
"If he's got the chance to go somewhere else and get maybe something which will secure his future for the rest of his life then we have to look at that and at the bigger picture.
"We have to take his personal views into account and I do that in lots of ways because he's been a great player for us.
"He's been brilliant for us for five and half years and for the money we paid for him he has been one of the outstanding players this club has had.
"But if nothing happens and he is still here I'll be doing somersaults."
Pulis insists Sunderland have made an offer for Fuller but said they were not the only ones who had made contact with the club about the player.
He had earlier told his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie at Wolves: "Sunderland have made an offer and both clubs are talking.
"But it is not just Sunderland - other clubs are interested.
"Everyone knows what the asking price is - it is just sorting things out now."
Asked whether Fuller had asked for permission to speak to Sunderland, Pulis replied "Yes, of course. We've had a chat together. We've sat down and spoken about it.
"He knows what's going on. In today's modern world everyone knows what's going on before it's going on.
"He knows the score and what it's about."
Pulis, who after signing John Carew on loan from Aston Villa last week is still trying to add to his squad, admits everyone plays games in the transfer window.
"The phoney war is still going on in lots of respects," he added.
"It is getting closer and closer (to the close of the window) so decisions have to be made soon.
"You think you are close to bringing in players but it is a difficult market because no-one wants to spend money - everyone wants to loan.
"Everyone is threatening to do things but we'll have to wait and see.
"We are busy trying to wheel and deal. I think we have to fill a couple of spots urgently just to make sure we see ourselves through these last 15 (Barclays Premier League) games - it is important for us."

All me know is that Stoke City is wicked. Them buy so many players getting higher pay then Fuller and not even contributing what Fuller has. The man a contract extention with some money on it. He has been negociating from this summer. They are willing to buy lesser player for more money but continue to disregard the man request to be "one" of their top wage earner. You think if Fuller got a decent money he would be going anywhere?
