Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth - Reno stretched their unbeaten run to 10 games, defeating battling Arnett Gardens, 2-1, at STETHS Sports Complex yesterday to stay in the leading pack of the Wray and Nephew Premier League.
Reno took the lead through midfielder Nicholi Findlayson in the 37th minute.
The powerful striker Kirk Wright, who could easily have had a hat-trick, made it 2-0 in the 48th before second-half substitute Kwame Richardson, who added zest to the Arnett cause, pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 88th.
A good crowd, with a generous mix of STETHS (St Elizabeth Technical High School) students, watched a largely lacklustre first half which went Reno's way when Arnett defender Anthowe Dawkins was penalised for handling the ball in the box. Findlayson scored the right-footer.
A hard-running Reno started the second half brilliantly, scoring after just three minutes. Winning the ball on the left side of midfield, Reno drew oohs, aahs and a crescendo of applause as a flowing diagonal movement involving Wright, Nyron Davis and Kevon Grant ended with Wright blasting Grant's forward pass, first time, from the right side of the box just inside Julian McLeish's right-hand post.
Marcelino Blackburn, gifted by a Fabian Blake error, could have pulled one back within 10 minutes, but the impressive Under-20 goalkeeper Dwayne Kerr dived low to save brilliantly.
Midway the second half, Kerr blocked brilliantly from Jonathan Williams' close-range header and from the scrambled clearance, the Arnett substitute Jerry Walters kicked high.
Another Reno counterattack saw Findlayson surging through the middle only to kick high after being fed from the left by Damion McNain.
A spirited Arnett kept pressing and earned reward when referee Ricardo Sailsman pointed to the spot for handled ball, despite Reno protests that the infringement had taken place outside the area.
Richardson hammered home the consolation.
A satisfied Reno coach Wendell Downswell said all had gone according to plan.
"We have met our objective," he said. "In the first half we were a little off, but we got a goal and in the second we were much improved. Now we're really looking forward to facing Waterhouse at Drewsland on Sunday," he said.
Arnett's coach Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey credited his team for a "fighting" second-half effort, but was highly critical of the officiating.
[B]Teams
Reno FC - Dwayne Kerr, Everton Palmer, Kendrick Quarrie, Omar Dallas, Nyron Davis, Fabian Blake, Kevon Grant, Nicholi Findlayson, Kirk Wright, Martin Williams (Damion McNain 77th).
Booked: Palmer (20th), Findlayson (27th), Williams (42nd), Black (43rd)
Subs not used: G Brown, E Taylor, R Golaub, D Thorpe, M Howard, K Blair.
Arnett Gardens - Julian McLeish, Wayne Ellis, Anthowe Dawkins, William Richards (Mardio Simpson 66th), Craig Gordon, Loxley Thompson (Kwame Richardson 66th), Marcelino Blackburn, Shane Edwards (Jerry Walters 76th) , Kevin Rose, Jonathan Williams, Gerald Neil.
Booked: Blackburn (31), Thompson (34th), Neil (42nd)
Subs not used: M Benbow, B Palmer, M Nelson, O Morrison
Referee: Ricardo Sailsman,<P cl
