Impasse between JFF and PLCA almost at an end

    JFF President Captain Horace Burrell.

The standoff between national players and the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) over contracts is nearing its end.
New contracts will be drawn following Thursday's meeting between the JFF at the Terra Nova Hotel.
The Premier League Clubs Association said their suggested modifications have been accepted by the JFF, whose President, Horace Burrell said there were no major disagreements.
“Of course there are amendments, recommendations that came in from the PLCA which were quite solid and the agreement is that the adjustment would be made and be ready within the next seven days. The draft with the adjustments is circulated to the members and signed off within a week,” Captain Burrell said.
The impasse over contracts arose shortly after the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique.
The original contracts offered by the JFF to players would have seen them giving up their intellectual rights.
The PLCA had however conceded that some of the players’ monetary demands were excessive.

I see that the media suggests representatives of the JFF and the DPL clubs representatives met...but nowhere was it suggested that the players or their representatives were at the meeting. Where players or their representatives at the meeting?

The reason I am asking this simple question stems from the fact that for some silly reason I thought the dispute was between players and the JFF...and I thought the parties having the dispute should have been in the meeting trying to settle same?

The players are making themselves pawn. The JFF nor the PLCA are representing their interest. You think the PLCA wan't players to walk out on them either?

Until these players, some of them educated form some sort of union and defend themselves they are doing nothing going to the "Boss" and depending on them been fair. The players have to take some responsibility as nuff of them educated and others have experience in the pros. Time to put it to use.

a hope so but the atttitude of some is to leave it up to "whoever" and then cuss them when things nuh right, Not to take responsibility. I have seen a few players like Tappa, Tyrone, Harris and others grown up and giving back something but time enough for them to organize themselves and get help.

JFF, PLCA meeting described as 'fruitful'

              Friday, January 07, 2011

A meeting between the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA) to review aspects of a new contract issued to senior Reggae Boyz, has been deemed "amicable" and "fruitful".

President of the JFF, Captain Horace Burrell, said yesterday's meeting at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston "addressed all the points of concerns" that the PLCA had raised and he considered the matter resolved.

BURRELL.. meeting addressed all points of concerns

              1/1

"The meeting was conducted in an atmosphere of professionalism, and all the points of contention were settled amicably," Burrell said.

Though the JFF boss did not go into details, some of the points that would have been discussed would be issues related to terms of work and remuneration.

The PLCA is acting on behalf of some 16 national senior team representatives, who play in the PLCA-run Digicel Premier League (DPL).
It is not clear whether or not the remainder of the 40-man pool of senior players -- some of whom are overseas-based -- had issue with the new four-year contract.

Some two weeks ago the Edward Seaga-led PLCA, acting on behalf of the local-based players, went public with their position on the new contract, blasting its construct as being "draconian".

The body -- made up of and representing the 12 Premier League clubs -- also lambasted the JFF for its "autocratic" approach and further accused the governing body of the sport of "bullying" players into signing the contract by the December 30 deadline -- a claim the Federation vigorously denied.

That deadline was later scrapped, with both parties seeking instead to open the lines of discussion.

Another meeting planned prior between the heads of the PLCA and the JFF in Ocho Rios was called off.

When contacted yesterday, the PLCA's Latoya DaCosta said the organisation will not be making an official comment until next Tuesday, at which time a new draft of the contract is expected to be finalised.

At yesterday's negotiation, Burrell was backed up by JFF treasurer Gary Sinclair; chairman of the finance committee Leighton McKnight, and Technical Committee chairman Howard McIntosh.

The PLCA team included Seaga and his deputy, Carvel Stewart.

The new four-year contract was crafted and issued as a direct response to the players' ultimatum issued to the JFF for better wages and their consequent threat to withdraw their services at the recently concluded Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique.

The players -- through skipper Shavar Thomas, Luton Shelton, Jermaine Taylor and Rodolph Austin -- forced the JFF to bow to their claims which turned out to be 80 per cent of the winning prize money of US$120,000 (J$10.2 million) and US$100 (J$8,700) per diem for each player for the 12-day tournament.

To offset the shortfall of the total per diems, JFF president Captain Horace Burrell had to dip into his pocket for US$14,000 (J$1.2 million).
Originally, The JFF had offered the players US$500 (J$44,000) in total per diem and a 50 per cent stake of whatever prize monies won.

On their return to Jamaica after defeating Guadeloupe 5-4 on penalties to successfully defend the Digicel Caribbean Cup, the players apologised for the 'stick up', which they deemed "bad judgement" and conceded it caused the country great embarrassment.

The stand-off between the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the senior players over contracts appears poised for an amicable settlement following a meeting between the former and the Premier League Clubs Association (PLCA) yesterday.

The three-hour long meeting, which was held at the Terra Nova Hotel in St. Andrew was attended by JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell; treasurer Gary Sinclair, chairman of the Finance Committee, Leighton McKnight, and technical committee chairman Howard McIntosh sat down with PLCA chairman Edward Seaga and deputy chairman, Carvel Stewart.

Burrell was very pleased with the outcome of the meeting as he believes an amicable settlement on the various issues has been reached.

"There were some concerns expressed by the PLCA and we had discussions around all the points, which were raised," Burrell said. "The JFF made adjustments based on most of the points made and at the end of it, we came to an amicable position and we have decided to make these amendments on a draft, which will be ready for circulation by next Tuesday," he further disclosed.

                Changes to contract
There will be a number of changes to the original contract but Burrell anticipates no further glitches.

"The meeting went extremely well and, in my humble opinion, we are all working towards the same objectives and I believe that one would have to conclude that it was therefore a success," Burrell said.

Seaga also deemed the meeting a success but intends to carefully review the final draft.

"We think it is going very well and amendments have been made where amendments are needed," Seaga expressed. "We think that the packaging in its final analysis will turn out to be all right. We are not finished as yet but we have to go through it one by one, but what we have done so far is satisfactory," he concluded.

The JFF had decided to issue four-year contracts, which represent "the life of the administration", in response to an ultimatum issued to the federation by the players at the just-concluded Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique.

The team had rejected the JFF's offer of US$500 (J$43,000) in total per diem and demanded instead US$1,200 (J$103,000) for the 12-day tournament. They also demanded 80 per cent of whatever prize money was received, which turned out to be the winning purse of US$120,000 (J$10.2 million).

The JFF yielded to the demands of the players but in an effort avoid a repeat of the incident drafted the new contracts.

The PLCA, however, deemed the new contracts to be ill-considered and a devious attempt by the JFF to hijack the rights of the players.

                  What were the players grouses?

                  Where those addressed?

To whom were concessions made? What were those concessions?

...again - PLCA (Clubs) and the JFF (Boss of the Clubs) were represented...???? ...and came to agreements with which they were satisfied???? ...what of the PLAYERS? Where they 'locked out'?
