First, we must say that this is the best chance that the U17 team has of qualifying for U17 World Cup. 1) CONCACAF has 4 spots, the most ever. 2) The U17 World cup competition is being hosted in Mexico, so Mexico is not in the qualifying competition for CONCACAF. Jamaica is hosting the CONCACAF finals.
The first bad move for the JFF was appointing W. Downswell. How can we expect different results from making the same decisions? There may not be many choices of coaches, but where has W. Downswell shown that he has the ability to develop and effectively coach an international team? NEVER!! Did anyone hear what happened to his U20 team in Guyana? They did win the group but the team demonstrated poor technical and tactical play. You can definitely see the major difference in team performance and play from W. Downswell and T. Whitmore. Not comparison.
Now, the JFF made a good move to have this tour in Brazil, first for 3 weeks and now extended to 6 weeks. Then we hear the reports of the games. First, when you hear of multiple 16 year old boys coming down with groin injury in training, this only tell you about improper preparation and poor coaching. Second, when you hear that the referee of one of the games has to stop the game to get the Jamaican team to rest and get dehydrated, this is a complete demonstration of poor preparation and lack of understanding of hydration. This is not what you expect from an international team. The team brings two goal keepers and both get injured causing one practice game to be canceled. A replacement keeper is being flown in. A player with a known injury situation is brought on the tour and has to be sent home. Also, when you hear about the team having mix-up about when games are supposed to start, why is this. Poor team management. When the team is playing some of the 3rd rate Brazilian club U18 team and getting completely outplayed, this is not good. The last game they played, this U18 team was truly a 3rd rate team and was down 3-0 before the Brazilian coach had mercy and withdrew most of his starters and then Jamaica came back into the game. This was not because of good performance.
This coaching and management team for the U17 team is poor. How can we expect anything different from a W. Downswell team? This is what has happened in the past but we expect something different this time.
And we will have to live with this again for the U20 team since W. Downswell is also the U20 coach.
Ahh!!!!
