MONTEGO BAY, St James — Controversial 'hand balls' that led to decisive goals in two ISSA schoolboy finals have led to the suspension of two referees groups for at least the remainder of the calendar year.
The incidents which occurred less than a week apart have sparked widespread debates in and out of football circles.
Yesterday, Dave Meikle of the Jamaica Football Federation's Referees Committee (JFFRC) confirmed the actions taken against the officials who officiated in the daCosta Cup final at Jarrett Park on December 4 and the All-Island Under-14 decider at Dinthill Technical on December 10.
Rusea's and Jamaica College (JC) benefited from the errors, beating Lennon and Cornwall College by respective 1-0 margins in extra-time.
Anthony Walker of Rusea's handled the ball in the final minute of extra-time against Lennon, giving his school its ninth hold on the title.
Lennon coach Merron Gordon went onto the field to protest the goal but was escorted off by police officers.
The crew which officiated in that game -- referee Patrick McPherson;, assistants Robert Lindsay and Melvin Reid and fourth official Donat McKinley -- has been suspended until December 31.
Meanwhile, Dominic James' goal helped JC retain their title, but the goal was later ruled to have been a 'handled ball'.
Meikle said they met to discuss the Under-14 game on Monday and the recommendation forwarded to the JFF was for the all-St Catherine-based crew of referee Garfield Gardner, assistants Jermaine Yeesingh and Lenval Peart, as well as Yakeeni Malcolm, to be suspended until the second week of January 2011.
