Rovers’ Indian owners will try to talk the Argentina superstar out of retirement as part of their dream to make the sleepy Lancashire club a top name.
Maradona had a brief, colourful spell with the Argentina national team who he took to the World Cup finals – despite up-and-down results in qualifying.
The Rao brothers hope to attract a big name to their new club as a way of promoting their Indian poultry company worldwide.
Allardyce was not considered glamorous enough and paid the price. Current first-team coach Steve Keane has stepped in as caretaker boss.
Maradona has not worked in Europe as a coach, but was worshipped in Spain and Italy during his playing career at Barcelona and Napoli.
The charismatic figure would need British staff to work beside him, but the Raos would be happy just to have him associated with the club.
An Indian insider said: “Maradona is seen as the right profile for the VH Group. He could be offered the manager’s job, the general manager’s job or even technical director.”
Maradona was mysteriously in England recently and made no secret of the fact he is keen to return to management.
