Historical Facts on the Digicel Caribbean Cup

    - September, 22 2010 -
    • The "Cope Caribe" – as it was known then – began in 1989. In 2004, Digicel announced its proud sponsorship of the tournament and the first Digicel Caribbean Cup took place that year. This year is the fourth tournament of the DCC (2004. 2006, 2008, and 2010).
    • The 2010 tournament kick-offs on October 2nd and runs until December 5th
    • The Digicel Caribbean Champions for 2010 are to net the largest prize package ever in football in the region at US$120,000.
    • The Digicel Caribbean Cup is a tournament for the Caribbean federations currently serving biannually.
    • The Digicel Caribbean Cup is a qualifier for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
    • Digicel announced its four year sponsorship of the tournament in May 2004. Following on the heels of its announcement, Digicel received a special award from former South African President, Nelson Mandela in recognition of its investment in the Cup.
    • The tournament was not held in years 2000, 2002 and 2003.
    • With the increased investment by Digicel in 2006, the tournament became the largest ever Caribbean football tournament to be held in the region with more international matches played in more islands with more teams than ever before.
    • A revised format of seven preliminary qualifying groups and an eight-team finals tournament means that there will be 55 competitive matches in this year’s tournament compared to 16 in 2004.
    • 23 regional teams will compete for the title of Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010.
    • In keeping with its commitment to the growth of football in the region, title sponsor, Digicel, has substantially increased its investment in the tournament to allow for the expanded format.
    • Digicel’s increased investment also means that teams can look forward to a substantial increase in prize money, with preliminary group winners taking home prize money for the first time.
    • Digicel Caribbean Cup prize money allocations are as follows: First prize of US$120,000 with US$70,000, US$50,000, US$30,000 to the second place winner and third and forth runners up respectively.
