Reggae Boyz focus on positive result

    Published: Wednesday | November 17, 2010

Audley Boyd, Assistant Editor - Sports FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida:
EXECUTION at goal, marshalling the ball and their opponents, are prime targets at which Jamaica's Reggae Boyz will be taking aim, when they line up against Costa Ticos in a friendly international football match, at the Lockhart Stadium here tonight, beginning at 8 p.m.

"Our major concern is we're trying to work on our ball possession, and how we close down players, and our shooting," said Theodore Whitmore, head coach of the Jamaica team, following an extensive and intensive training session at Sunrise in the North Lauderdale area, yesterday morning.
There was much focus on all three elements in various drills, as the Reggae Boyz extended their preparation for the match, which is expected to provide a genuinely decent yardstick of their readiness for the upcoming Digicel Caribbean Cup (DCC) finals, which will be held in Martinique from November 26 to December 5.

The Jamaicans are the defending champions and want to earn a lift ahead of their regional title defence by closing out tonight's game with a morale-boosting win.

    Important game
"It's a very important game for us," Whitmore noted of the clash against the Central Americans. "It's the last game before we enter a major competition. We're looking forward to a positive result, we're looking forward to see how we approach this game going into the DCC."
The last time the countries met, Jamaica won 1-0 on a Ryan Johnson goal, in early September at the National Stadium in Kingston.

Johnson, who represents Major League soccer outfit San Jose Earthquakes, will miss tonight's encounter after contesting Saturday's semi-finals against Colorado Rapids, with Reggae Boy Omar Cummings.
Both strikers will be included in the DCC squad, for which several players on Whitmore's roster are looking to stake strong claims, as the final selection is incomplete.

"Every player here is under consideration for the DCC. After the game tomorrow night, we'll select the final 20 players for the DCC," Whitmore stated.

Actually, one player, prolific striker Luton Shelton, will miss the match following a collision with goalkeeper Dwayne Miller at yesterday's practice.

Shelton, who appeared uncon-scious while lying flat after the clash, received attention on the pitch from team physician Dr Derrick McDowell, before he was taken to the West Side Hospital, Broward County.

"He had a minor head injury, not a concussion," McDowell revealed. "They did a CT scan and an X-ray of the jaw - at the tempero mandibular joint - and everything was normal.

"They suggested that he rest for two to three days with outpatient neurological observation," McDowell added.

The coach had played Shelton and O'Brian White as a pair upfront, on the starting eleven during the training session, and was keen to see them work together.

He said: "We've seen O'Brian White, basically himself and Shelton, we'd like to see where they are."

White represented Jamaica at the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 levels, and now gets his first look-in among the seniors. Shelton's likely replacement could be Dever Orgill, a livewire of immense talent who made his debut in Jamaica's last game, a home win against Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), earlier this month.

Whitmore could also push winger Dane Richards upfront from the wide midfield role and inject another midfielder, as tried, tested and proven regulars Jason Morrison and Richard Edwards were not among the starters in yesterday's drills.

Rodolph Austin, Shaun Francis, who got a debut against T&T, Keammar Daley and Lovel Palmer featured among that midfield listing, as Whitmore looked at his options. At the back of the team, Shavar Thomas, Jermaine Taylor and Adrian Reid shielded goalkeeper Miller, while the team worked on its plot.

Launch pad for 2014 w cup
The Boyz are ranked 79th by FIFA, 14 places below the Costa Ricans, who had mixed results in their last two friendlies - beating El Salvador 2-1 at home, but losing 2-0 away to Peru.

Jamaica also lost to Peru recently, 2-1 here in Fort Lauderdale.
Ultimately, the Costa Ricans are using the game to launch their preparations for the 2014 World Cup Finals, to be staged in Brazil. They have a new coach, Argentine Ricardo Lavolpe, who previously managed Mexico.

He has included about eight overseas-based players in his squad, headed by Bryan Ruiz, their captain, who plays in the Netherlands at FC Twente.
Several of the Costa Ricans are used to matching up against their Jamaican counterparts, with the New York Red Bulls' Roy Miller, Chivas USA's Michael Umana, Michael Barrantes of Norwegian club Aalesunds and Randall Alofeica (KAA Gent, Belgium) playing in same leagues.

Speaking through an interpreter, Lavolpe told a press conference yesterday that he is "more interested in seeing how the players react" in the game against Jamaica and "know that they are on the same page."
He also said even though it is a friendly, "it's a game to get results."
For Jamaica, the target is the same.

Toronto FC striker O'Brian White is set to make his senior Jamaican international debut when the Reggae Boyz face CONCACAF rivals Costa Rica in a friendly international here at the Lockhart Stadium at 8:00 pm today.

White, who will be 25 next month, has already represented the Jamaica Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 teams and had been invited on a few occasions to represent Canada, where he has lived for the past eight years. He is expected to start as the central striker in a three-man attacking unit.

"O'Brian White has been someone we've been looking on for the past couple of months and we tried to get him for the game in Jamaica (against Trinidad and Tobago). That was unsuccessful so we tried to get him before the Digicel Caribbean Cup (DCC) to see what he has to offer the team and the country," head coach Theodore Whitmore explained yesterday.

"Every player here is under consideration for the DCC. After the game tomorrow night we'll select the final 20 players for the DCC," he added.
The two teams last met in early September at Kingston's National Stadium when a Ryan Johnson 66th minute strike separated the teams. Today's encounter is expected to be different, with Jamaica parading just nine players from that winning squad, while the Central Americans will showcase only seven players from that game, but more importantly, they will have a new coach in 58-year-old Argentine Ricardo La Volpe at the helm for the first time.

La Volpe, who was the reserve goalkeeper from the 1978 winning World Cup squad, has been coach of the Mexican national team to the last two World Cup Finals.

He is known for his tactical flexibility during matches and during a press conference here at the Westin Hotel yesterday, he told the media that the process now is getting to know his players and the players getting to know him, with the ultimate aim of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup Finals in Brazil.

The chain-smoking coach, who has won the Mexican League in the 1992-93 season with Atlante FC and Toluca in 2002 Apertura season, has a reputation for attacking football and for bringing along young players.

He took over from former national player Ronald Gonzalez shortly after the defeat to Jamaica in early September and said yesterday that he hopes to build his own philosophy on the team, but he wants to see how the players react in his first game today.

He is expected to play a 5-2-2-1 formation with Victor Nunez being the lone striker, just ahead of captain and influential playmaker Bryan Ruiz of FC Twente in Holland.

The team also includes players such as goalkeeper Keylor Navas of Spain's Albacete, Roy Miller of the New York Red Bulls, Michael Umana of Chevas USA, Dennis Marshall of Aalborg in Denmark, Michael Barrantes of Aalesunds in Norway, Randall Azofeifa of KAA Gent in Belgium.

Whitmore is also expected to play an attacking game, based on the team's training tactics yesterday morning. Whitmore employed the usual 3-4-3 formation, but had his four midfielders playing in a diamond shape with Rodolph Austin in a deep midfield role flanked by Shaun Francis on the left and Lovel Palmer on the right, with Keammar Daley playing an attacking roaming role behind the front three.

Dane Richards of the New York Red Bulls was on the right and Luton Shelton played on the left. However, the Boyz suffered a blow towards the end of the near 100-minute workout when Shelton and goalkeeper Dwayne Miller collided during a shooting drill.

The incident left both players lying prostrate on the ground, but Shelton suffered more and had to be helped off the field by the team's doctor Derrick McDowell and Whitmore.

He complained of a headache and said he thought he had lost consciousness for a while immediately after the collision of heads. The striker was later taken to the West Side Hospital Broward Country, where he underwent a CT scan of the brain and an X-ray of the tempero mandibular joint which revealed that everything was normal. Dr McDowell said he wasn't prepared to take any chances, though all the player's neurological signs appeared normal and the player was not unco-ordinated prior to leaving for the hospital.

"He suffered a minor head injury, not a concussion," Dr McDowell told the media last evening. "He was ordered to rest for two-three days with outpatient neurological observation," added Dr McDowell.

With Shelton being ruled out, it is unsure how Whitmore will juggle his line-up in this his last practise game before the team begins its defence of the Digicel Caribbean Cup in Martinique later this month.

"I was very pleased with the session," Whitmore said yesterday before heading off to the press conference.

He added that it was a very important game for the team going into the Caribbean Cup. "We are looking forward to a positive result, we're looking forward to seeing how we approach this game going into the DCC. Our major concern is we're trying to work on our ball possession and how we close down players and our shooting as well."

The coach added that he has capable players in attack to get goals, but warned that the players in defence must be solid as well. The former Reggae Boyz star player and captain noted that the team has not had a very good record at the Lockhart Stadium, but he was looking to start turning that trend around.

"We want to approach this game and the DCC like we're playing Argentina," he said.

Yesterday he had Richard McCallum in goal, backed by captain Shavar Thomas, Jermaine Taylor and Adrian Reid in defence.
The squad is completed by Dwayne Miller, Obrian Woodbine, Richard Edwards, Keneil Moodie, Troy Smith, Jason Morrison and Dever Orgill.
