  • MoBay Mayor to chair U-17 qualifying series

MONTEGO BAY, St James — President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell, yesterday announced that Montego Bay's Mayor, Charles Sinclair, will chair the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the CONCACAF Under-17 World Cup qualifying tournament to be staged February 12-28 next year.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce the chairmanship of the Local Organising Committee. It is going to be chaired by Your Worship, the Mayor of Montego Bay," Burrell noted at a press conference at Rose Hall Ritz Cartlton Hotel yesterday.

Sinclair will have JFF's first vice-president Bruce Gaynor as his deputy, and will also be assisted by Western Football Confederation chairman Linnel McLean.

Meanwhile, JFF's general secretary Horace Reidhas been temporarily relocated to Montego Bay to co-ordinate the event.

"It's a huge task and because of that, the general secretary... will almost live here. He's going to be the general co-ordinator for the tournament... We're not going to leave any stones unturned," Burrell argued.

Meanwhile, Burrell said the series will be an historic affair as it was the first time as many as 12 teams from the region will participate in the qualifying tournament.

He said the odds are great for the country to be among the four teams qualifying from the region, along with automatic qualifiers and host country Mexico.

"Jamaica has an outstanding chance of making our mark in this qualifying... I ask the public to support the tournament in a significant way," pleaded Burrell.

Meanwhile, like Burrell, CONCACAF deputy general secretary Ted Howard and director of CONCACAF marketing and television, Manola Zubiria, pointed to the media coverage the tournament will provide for Jamaica.
"It's absolutely important that we get your support because this event is going to get an enormous amount of exposure," Howard noted.

He said it was important that the organisers get the event right as it will be used as a precursor to the Under-20 version to be staged in Guatemala.

In the meantime, Mayor Sinclair promised his team would work feverishly to ensure the tournament is a success and serves to propel the return of Montego Bay to its former football glory.

"An event like this will be the catalyst to bring back football to its glory in western Jamaican. We'll be working very, very hard to ensure that the tournament attains success," Sinclair stated.

Yesterday's event was also attended by respective CFU and CONCACAF general secretaries Angenie Khani and Itala Zanzi.
