  • I wonder what Jim Rome will say now

A few years ago after Beckham's first trip to the US, he had asked for a store to be closed so he and his wife could go shopping, either that or they asked that the store allow them to go shopping after they had closed to the regular customers.

Their request was turned down and Jim Rome mede a big deal over it, he had never heard of Beckham and he assumed no one in the US had either and so he poured scorn and ridicule of Beckham.

I hope idiot Jim Rome has by now learnt who Beckham is and why he would make such a request.

It woulkd be interesting to see whether Jim Rome tries to get Beckham as a guest. I hope Beckham goes on the show and punch him out like the former NFL quarterback Jim Everette did. Rome had taken to calling Everette Chrissy Everette ala the female tennis player then, saying he was soft.

So on the show the QB dared him to call him that name to his face and when he took the bait, pushed over the table and beat up Rome, people had to peel Everette off Rome.

Even prior to that incident I never liked Rome, he always came across as trying too hard to be controversal.
Solidarity is not a matter of well wishing, but is sharing the very same fate whether in victory or in death.

damn.. thought i was the only one who disliked jim rome... cant stand a bone holier than thou attitude towards athletes...

its not only jim rome who will be eating crow... many american sports talk hosts and sports writers who have deliberately spurned soccer will as well... soccer is rolling like a snow ball in america... i still do not believe it will be as big as the traditional american sports in the near future but it will command its respectable place...

Baddaz - I personally believe that the problem with ball in America is NOTHING more than the issue of TV. If there were a way to get as many commercials in a football game as in an American football game, you would see every advertiser in America lining up. And there is the rub - with advertising money, comes the BIG TIME. My guess is that with the convergence of the internet and TV, the advertising business model will change and football in America will be a big time beneficiary. Then those morons like Rome will simply...disappear.

Paul Marin (1/11/2007)Baddaz - I personally believe that the problem with ball in America is NOTHING more than the issue of TV. regretably, morons like rome will simply concede that they did not see the success of football coming... then they will pretend to know the game and do the same thing they do to the athletes of the traditional american sports - talk crap about them... that the way they make their money...

paul, you touch on another topic altogether regarding the problem with ball in america... for one, the advertising is a major issue as tv revenues is a driver of any sport competing for prime time... this is where i believe soccer is faltering on tv... i believe the issue of timeout will raise its head again... in my opinion, either fifa will have to break and allow for some kind of timeout or quarter break to allow for tv advertising or the american league will do it on their own...

the fact is to the average american soccer is not as entertaining to watch on tv as basketball, football or for that matter hockey .. compared to baseball, its not filled with historical and statistical info to keep the viewers interest when the action is slow...

at the parks americans are used to getting up in between breaks in action to get beerand food at the concession stands... its in the american culture... soccer doesnt encourage that behaviour... although those can be worked around, americans are not used to sitting for 45 mins without getting out their seats... they dont want to miss the action, worse if they should miss the only goal of a match while they are in the bathroom...

therefore, i think they will eventually play the game in quarters to allow for advertising revenue... i would be willing to accept that for the game to thrive in the states...

Hey? Hey? Hey? Americans are humans? ...and, humans are thespecies on Earththat mostutilise brain for thinking through situations.

The Americans will come to 'luv' football in greater and greater numbers...and by the way, have you checked FIFA'sBig Count -found on ourRBSC Forum-recently? The numbers engaged in the game is 'humongous'. I would bet that today's numbers would be even greater.

mmmmm? Have you been noticing the exposure MLS, Becks and football (soccer) has been picking up?

...all needed is a Klingsman to - as pera Wenger at Arsenal - to pull the young gems (players with tremendous technical ability) out of the unrecognised leagues and make REAL USA TEAM.

btw - You heard it hear first - If Gulati does not get into the mindset of getting and leaving alone while supplying tremendous 'back-office support' real football person as TD - fire Gulati as currently he is holding back'rapid fast forward' of US football (soccer).

Fire the ego-maniac! Either he gets rid of that part of himself...or our (USSF directors) the directors show him the door!

I guess you should complete that by saying Americans are not used to sitting for 45 mins without getting out their seats to find something to eat.

Jim Everett never "beat up" Rome, although I wish he would have.

He came to his senses and stopped himself before that happened.

You can see the incident here.
