AKRON, Ohio – Individual accolades continued to roll in for Darren Mattocks, the freshman striker on The No. 1 University of Akron men's soccer team, as he was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Tuesday.
It is the second consecutive week Mattocks has won the award and the sixth time an Akron player has done so overall this fall.
Mattocks, who was named to the National Teams of the Week by College Soccer News (CSN) and Top Drawer Soccer (TDS) as well as the National Player of the Week by TDS Monday, recorded the first hat trick of his career in a 4-0 victory over Buffalo last Saturday. Mattocks leads the Zips (11-0-1) with 10 goals in 12 games.
Mattocks scored twice in the first half and added another goal in the second for his second multiple-goal performance of the season. The Jamaican striker has been on a torrid streak as of late with six goals in his last four contests, including back-to-back game-winners at Oakland and at Northern Illinois. In all, Mattocks is the second-highest scoring freshman in the nation.
Mattocks and the Zips will host Michigan (8-3-3) tonight at Lee R. Jackson Soccer Field at 7:30 p.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast locally on SportsTime Ohio. For channel listings, visit SportsTimeOhio.com.
