Goal.com MLS Player Of The Week: Omar Cummings, Colorado Rapids

    Oct 18, 2010 12:27:00 AM

The Los Angeles Galaxy went into the weekend needing a win to wrap up the Supporters' Shield with a week to spare in the MLS regular season. With all the playoff spots divvied, Omar Cummings and the Colorado Rapids made sure the last weekend still held meaning by earning a smash-and-grab 3-1 win over LA.

Two wickedly deflected shots tied the score up at 1-1 early in the first half. That's when Omar Cummings took over.

First, the Jamaican burst past two Galaxy defenders down the right channel before sliding a perfectly-weighted cross into the run of Conor Casey. The burly striker to sliced the ball into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal.

Then, in the second half, Cummings iced off the game with a goal himself. Another explosive burst of pace took him beyond the recovering LA backline and onto a Casey feed. Then the striker put a slanted left-footed shot past countryman Donovan Ricketts in the goal.

Next up Cummings will attempt to rip the Supporters' Shield away from rivals Real Salt Lake, before heading into the first postseason experience of his career.

Jeremy Horton: Omar Cummings gets the nod from me, being the instrumental attacking force in a stunning 3-1 Colorado win at LA. This guy doesn't get the credit he deserves, but his one-goal one-assist game against LA shows why Cummings is the most complete striker in the league.

Ramin Majd: Though the Rapids had already clinched a playoff berth before kickoff, their 3-1 road thumping of the Galaxy sent the message that Colorado will be a force to reckon with in the post-season. Omar Cummings led the charge, scoring one goal and assisting on another. The Jamaican's goal was his 13th of the season, quietly putting him on the fringes of the Golden Boot race.

Nick Rosano: Omar Cummings keyed one of the more unlikely results of the weekend by setting up Conor Casey on the game winning goal before icing the result with a well-taken left foot shot. The display against Los Angeles took his total to 13 goals and three assists for the season, but that doesn't tell the whole story of what he does for the Rapids, and he should certainly at least be considered for the MVP award.

J.R. Eskilson: The Galaxy defense looked really well organized against the speedy, powerful Jamaican striker. Oh wait, that's not right. Cummings made them look silly as he chipped in a goal and an assist while LA spent 89 minutes arguing with Kevin Stott about his hairpiece. Cummings is going to be a handful for any team to face in the playoffs. A handful which LA had no answer for, and basically decided not to account for, which is usually a really good idea. So thanks Omar, for actually making the last week of the season worth watching. LA vs Dallas. Colorado vs RSL. IT IS THE SUPPORTERS' SHIELD BATTLE (which actually doesn't mean anything, but we all pretend like it does). I can feel the anticipation growing already.
