Williams (65th)
Tivoli.............................. .................0
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth - Striker Martin Williams netted in the 65th minute from a goal-mouth scramble as Reno FC continued their fine run in the Wray & Nephew Premier League with a 1-0 win over Tivoli Gardens FC at the STETHS Sports Complex yesterday.
Before a fair-sized crowd in dry, windy conditions, the first half was even with few goal-scoring opportunities.
But action picked up considerably in the second half. Picking up a pass from the right with 14 minutes of second half gone, Tivoli's Horace Howell kicked disappointingly wide with the Reno defence unlocked.
Four minutes later Williams got arguably the best chance of the game. Breaking free with Tivoli defenders in his wake, Williams' right foot shot was brilliantly parried by an advancing goalkeeper, Damion Crooks.
Within two minutes, Williams, his team and the entire Reno home support were celebrating. Fabian 'Lexus' Blake who had a fine game down the right of midfield found Kendrick Quarrie on the left with a lateral pass. The latter's wonderful diagonal cross found the overlapping Kevon Grant who leapt high to beat Crooks with a tame but well-placed header.
Desperate Tivoli defenders almost cleared the ball but a hustling Williams got in a boot to push the ball over the line.
Tivoli pressed hard for the equaliser but could have gone further behind with two minutes of regulation time left. Kirk Wright's left foot shot from inside the penalty box slammed into the cross bar and from the rebound the burly striker kicked wide.
And in time added, the Reno defence somehow scrambled off the line after a mistimed defensive header beat Blair.
A pleased Reno coach Wendell Downswell said his team remained "on target' though he noted they had almost paid the price for an overcautious approach after scoring. A chuckling Downswell agreed with suggestions that the display by Reno was one of the best ever by the Westmoreland team following the annual Christmas break. "Most definitely," he said. "Most times after Christmas we are a bit shaky," he added.
Tivoli's coach, Calvert Fitzgerald thought his team may have suffered from a later than planned arrival at STETHS. "I thought it was an evenly contested game but because we were late, I think we didn't get enough time to settle," he said.
In the Under-21 clash Tivoli won 4-1 with goals from Ottis Friend in the 58th and 89 minute, Jermaine Allen (20th) and Navion Boyd from a penalty in the 44th minute.
Reno's Errol Bryan scored a penalty in the 47th minute.
[B]Teams:
Reno FC - Kenrick Blair, Everton Palmer, Fabian Blake (Patrick Graham -89th), Nyron Davis, Dwayne Williams, Omar Dallas, Kendrick Quarrie, Nicholi Findlayson, Kevon Grant (Ryland Golaub - 86th), Martin Williams (Ricardo Scott -71), Kirk Wright.
Subs not used: D Kerr, M Howard, O Black, G Brown
Booked: Davis (63rd), Wright (75th), Blake (86th)
Tivoli Gardens - Damion Crooks, Dwight Heron, Kasai Hind
