BRANDING ROW? - TG shun Claro-sponsored Cup game
BY HOWARD WALKER Observer staff reporter walkerh@jamaicaobserver.com
    Thursday, August 19, 2010

WHAT appears to be a disagreement over telecoms branding rights may have been the reason for Tivoli Gardens FC's no-show for a Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Claro Champion's Cup game at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium yesterday.
Tivoli were scheduled to play Waterhouse FC in the feature, but failed to take the field for the 6:00 pm kick off.

Carlene Edwards, the general secretary of KSAFA, told the Observer that her organisation and Tivoli Gardens — sponsored by Digicel — failed to come to a mutual agreement after the West Kingston club insisted on displaying its Digicel signs at the Edward Seaga Stadium.
Against that background, KSAFA changed the match venue from Tivoli's home ground at Railway Oval to the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium.
Efforts by the Observer yesterday to get a comment on the matter from Tivoli Gardens proved futile. Team manager Brian Rose, who refused to to speak on the matter, referred this newspaper to the club's chairman Edward Seaga, whose cellular telephone rang without an answer up to press time last night.
For their no-show, Tivoli Gardens will be fined $25,000 by KSAFA and the match awarded to Waterhouse by a 3-0 scoreline, according to Edwards.
"We are in our rights," said Edwards. "They wanted the match down there displaying the Digicel advertisements on the perimeter boards and the dug-out".
Edwards said KSAFA had a meeting with a representative of Tivoli Gardens, whom she claimed agreed to their branding requirements. However, days later, the Digicel signs were still clearly displayed at the venue.
On August 3 KSAFA, in a meeting held with the Competitions Committee and Clubs participating in the 2010/2011 Claro Champions Cup, outlined the branding issue as follows:
    - Clubs must allow placement of at least six Claro branded perimeter boards at permanent home venues except for Premier League Clubs where at least six perimeter boards will be displayed during the Claro/KSAFA Champions Cup matches only and be removed thereafter
    - Clubs must ensure that during the Claro/KSAFA Champions Cup matches, NO competing brand of Claro, that is, Digicel, Lime (Cable & Wireless) or Flow is displayed. In cases where these competing brands are displayed outside of Claro/KSAFA competitions, clubs MUST allow Claro to cover or block these advertising boards/signage.
    - Clubs must provide/allow other branding opportunities for Claro which includes, feather banners bunting, blimps and to erect temporary 10x10 tent etc.
    - Clubs must allow for Claro Half Time Show/promotional activities.
Meanwhile, Cavalier advanced to the semi-final of the Claro Champion's Cup yesterday after 1-0 win over the University of the West Indies (UWI) in the curtain-raiser courtesy of a Kemel Mullings strike in the 62nd minute.
They will play Zone B runners-up Boys' Town on Friday, August 20, while Zone A winners Waterhouse will tackle Harbour View.

I think this is in extreme poor taste, how can the JFF allow this to continue.

Games cannot be put in jeopardy because rival companies don't as if they should advertise in the same venue as the other.

These things need to be ironed out way in the board rooms and negotiating tables way in advance.

i think this is a bigger issue. I think the sponsorship model is wrong and is past it relevancy. The MLS or the ePL have league sponsors and conflict but they are mechanisms to deal with this. If Digicel is paying TG why should they wear a claro shirt or put up Claro signs. At the same time you see this in the champs league in Europe where if Heineken is the sponsor and the local team if liverpool is sponsored by Carlberg you dont see Lpool changing shirts..

Clubs normally have their sponsors separate and apart from the sponsor of the league or competition they're competing in.

So clearly the name of the sponsors of the club should be on the jersey of the club, its a no brainer to me. The sponsor of the league or competition can find so many other ways of advertising.

Barclays is the sponsor of the premier league, other financial institutions have sponsored teams also in the bpl, I don't remember any sort of controversy surrounding that.

Is there a problem with the jerseys?

If Claro simply requires the removal/blocking of signs then I see no problem with that. It is their competition and they are not requiring the removal for DPL games.

But what if the Digicel agreement does not allow that?
