  • Hopes soar as club management seminar kicks off

    Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer

A number of high-profile FIFA club development officials are in the island conducting a FIFA Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF (WICWC) Club Management Seminar, which is geared at raising the standard of football administration here.

The five-day seminar, which got under way yesterday, is being held at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel and features a number of the nation's top football administrators, including those who are attached to Digicel Premier League (DPL) outfits.

Directors of the Professional Football Association of Jamaica, headed by chairman and former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga, and officials of the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) four regional confederations, were also in attendance.

"We recognise that it is difficult for us to make it to the next level with administrators who are not adequately trained and equipped to administer the sport at a high level," said JFF president, Captain Horace Burrell, at yesterday's launch of the event at the seminar's location.
"One cannot fight a war, figuratively speaking, by one's self and as such I am happy that you have joined me in championing the effective club management cause," he added.

    Seminar agenda
The seminar will deal with issues as it relates to club planning, finance, marketing, human relations and communications, among other areas.
According to Gregory Engel-brecht, FIFA's development manager for the Americas, who spoke on behalf of the sport's governing body, the course will follow closely that of international renditions, which have already been staged in other confederations.

"The aim is to assess local challenges by the way of dialogue and consultations and present best practices," said Engelbrecht.

    Official introduction
The launch also saw the official introduction of its main convenor, Daryll Warner, who is the FIFA development officer for the Caribbean. Warner is the son of FIFA vice-president and CONCACAF president, Austin (Jack).
"What you will learn is how to be a professional club in the global landscape, not only just in Jamaica or the Caribbean," said Warner.
"The hope is that at the end of the event, we would have changed people's mind from a 'Team' structure, as is mainly practised in the country, to a 'Club' structure, as is norm at the highest level," he explained.

Meanwhile, Carvel Stewart, chairman of reigning DPL champions, Harbour View, said he was happy at the staging of the seminar.
"It's a very important course and is long overdue. The approach is commendable and FIFA, especially its president Sepp Blatter, must be commended," said Stewart.
Among those who will conduct the seminar, and who were on hand at the launch were FIFA instructor Hugo Salcedo of the United States, FIFA instructor-consultant Chris Collie of Canada and FIFA MA Professionalisation Programme official, Thomas Grimm of Switzerland.
