Freddy Adu fails to impress Swiss club Sion

SION, Switzerland (AP) — Swiss club Sion passed on the chance to sign Freddy Adu yesterday after the former United States international spent the week there in training.

Sion said on its website that Adu had undeniable qualities but did not fit in with its plans.

Adu posted on his Twitter account that he hoped to have good news "in the next couple days".

"I know I'm going to be praying," Adu wrote. "Until then I will be incognito."

Adu was signed to Portuguese champion Benfica but was loaned out last season to Belenenses and Greek club Aris Thessaloniki.

The 21-year-old forward was not selected to play for the US at the World Cup finals in South Africa, and has failed in Europe to fulfil the potential he showed when joining DC United at age 14.

Sion had the option to sign Adu because a one-year transfer ban imposed by FIFA and upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last month will not take effect until January.

You remember player like Denilson from Brazil??? and so many English youth who show some promise but fail to deliver.

His career was POORLY managed by MLS and there is no way he should have been a professional at age 14. Hopefully Americans will learn a lesson over this career debacle.

It has nothing to do with the MLS. How old was he when he went to Europe? He was still young. He was no more than 17 so how the MLS mash him up innna 2 years? Didh't he pretty much walk out of DC United because he felt he wasn't getting enough playing time.

Like many ballas his talent as a teen never mature, and look at Altidore as oppose to Adu.

At 14 he was way too young to become a professional. He should have been playing with kids in youth leagues and developed slowly.

But he was never a star in the MLS. He showed talent and the hype build but at DC he was a bench player. You have fi realise how young players like Bibi, Maradona and Pele came on the national radar.

This thing happen all the time. Look at our own Keith Kelly, where is he playing now? A so the thing set. Only hope him make use a some a di money. Right now there is another 16 year old playing at DC now.

Well he was certainly a "youth" star. No doubt he was one of the best Under 17 players in the world. Man simply never grow (or finished growing).
