The disgruntled New England Revolution midfielder is set to join Fulham when the January transfer window opens, but the U.S. international is struggling to obtain a work permit. Fulham have agreed a purchase price from MLS for the player, but unless Dempsey obtains a work permit he could be delayed moving abroad until his contract expires a year from now.
Dempsey scored USA's goal against Ghana in the World Cup, but the midfielder lacks the requisite appearances for his country to qualify for a work permit. The MLS star's case is headed to a tribunal, which is causing Fulham manager Chris Coleman some consternation.
"We've agreed a fee, but it still has to go to the tribunal," Coleman admitted.
"He's had a few injury problems, so he's just a little bit short there [on national team appearances].
"But it's not like he's coming here to sit on the bench. He's coming because we've bought him to make a big impact."
Coleman already employs two of Dempsey's World Cup teammates, forward Brian McBride and defender Carlos Bocanegra -- who combined for the Cottagers' late equalizer against Chelsea at the weekend.
But while those two obviously have moved onto greener pastures in England, another of Dempsey's U.S. teammates had a move to the Premiership rejected.
Reading winger Bobby Convey was set to join Tottenham's first team in 2003 but the then-D.C. United player had his work permit and subsequent appeal rejected. Convey joined the Royals in 2004.
