    Brazilian league lacks bite

The example of Petkovic illustrates the pitfall. At his advanced age, he is one of the top playmakers in Brazilian football. Even in his prime, he was unable to make such a mark in Europe. It has become relatively easy to build up a reputation in domestic South American football. The pace of the game is slower, there is more time and space available and, especially in Brazil, referees give fouls for the slightest contact.

Ganso and Neymar are being told that they are footballing phenomena. Yet when they make the move to Europe, they are likely to experience their own kind of "reality shock".

That is certainly what happened to Robinho. When he was first making his name with Santos, he kept being told he was a genius. One pundit, the former World Cup striker Casagrande, used to argue that he was going to be better than Diego Maradona. It was just a matter of time before he received the Fifa World Player of the Year award.

      What a breddah cold

Anyhow, it is somewhat silly of them talking about Petkovic. He was an excellent player at Red Star Belgrade when he was only 20 and that is why Real Madrid signed him. He left and went to Brazil in his prime when things didn't work out in Spain and that is why most of the Yugoslavian coaches ignored him. The one who didn't, made him captain. Pavel Nedved at 37 would still be one of the best midfielders in Serie A. Donato was a top player in Spain till him start use a walking stick and Ryan Giggs still a run ball and Sheringham was one of the best strikers in EPL way into his 30s.

Typical thing from them. They have praised Joe Cole whenever he has simply had a decent season, yet the man has never even had a season as good as Robinho's first at City.

Tim Vickery is English but he has been living in Brazil for the past 16 years now. He's an expert on the Brazilian game and South American soccer in general.

And just because he wrote an article critical of the Brazilian league doesn't necessarily mean that he's propping up England. Chances are he thought they were crap in the World Cup, too.

He didn't express that though. What is the difference between the young players coming through in England and those in Brazil?

The last time I check there were a lot of young Brazillian players doing well in Europe. Some will do well while others will not a just so the thing set. There are 3 at Manu United, and one at AC Millan, Players in Germany and France amongst other places doing well so.... The expert not talking the full story.

but if the league in brasil is so poor one reason may be because the best players are shipped out to play in europe? no? probably not...that is too logical...

Legendinho has the typical British mindset. His comment on Petkovic says it all.
