  • Young Reggae Boy serious after crash

Young Reggae Boy, Andre Darby, is battling for life in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

Twenty-one year-old Darby was yesterday transferred to the hospital in an unconscious state after suffering severe head injuries in a two-vehicle accident on the Hellshire main road in the early hours of Monday morning. Immediately after the accident, Darby along with the occupants of both vehicles, were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was kept for over six and a half hours before being transferred to the University Hospital of the West Indies.

According to sources, Darby was a passenger in a car with three other persons on his way to Hellshire when it collided with another car travelling in the opposite direction. Darby, it is said, was sitting behind the front passenger's seat and suffered the worst injury.

"The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has been closely monitoring Andre's situation and the federation's medical committee has been spearheading efforts to ensure that he gets the best attention," said JFF team manager Roy Simpson.

"The neurosurgeon has seen him and we are awaiting results of tests done. It is clear it is a serious injury but we are hoping for the best," Simpson added.

Darby, a cultured defender who stands just over six feet tall, captained the country's Under-20 team which narrowly missed qualifying for the 2009 Under-20 World Cup in Egypt. Prior to forcing his way into the national set-up, the Naggo Head native represented Waterford High School where he stood out in the Manning and Walker Cup competitions.

At the club level, he distinguished himself for his hometown team, Naggo Head, before making the short trip
to Portmore United where he has featured in the Digicel Premier League (DPL).

let us breathe a prayer that he pulls through and makes a full and speedy recovery.
