  • NHL Video Replay, At A Glance

During the Stanley Cup champioship series, there were at least "no goal" calls that were changed to goals because video showed the puck barely crossed the goal line before being pulled out.

Patrick Kane's Cup winning goal in overtime in Game 6 had to be reviewed because the referee did not see the puck go into the net. He had to turn to avoid getting colliding with two players. The puck buried under the canvas backing at the base of the net.

    Here are the basic rules.

Video can be used to review several factors regarding a goal or no goal.

Video MUST BE CONCLUSIVE to reverse the original call on the ice.

The Referee or Supervisor in the press box can initiate a replay. There is no limit on the time that may be take to review the play.

If play is stopped, the review must take place during that stoppage. Once play resumes, the disputed play cannot be reviewed.

If the ruling on the ice is NO GOAL, and play continues, the disputed play may be reviewed at the first whistle. If the call is reversed to GOAL, all subsequent play INCLUDING GOALS AND MINOR PENALTIES, are cancelled, and the clock will be reset to the time the first goal was scored.
